Little is known about Blackbeard’s early years. Historians believe he may have served as a privateer during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714) before turning to piracy in the Caribbean.
Blackbeard became one of the most feared pirates of the early 18th century during the period known as the Golden Age of Piracy. He gained prominence under pirate captain Benjamin Hornigold before taking command of his own ship.In 1717, he captured a French slave ship, renamed it the Queen Anne's Revenge, and armed it with 40 guns, making it one of the most powerful pirate vessels of its time.
Blackbeard was known for his dramatic appearance. He wore slow-burning fuses in his thick black beard during battle, surrounding his face with smoke and giving him a supernatural image and fearsome reputation
