Although born in Leicester, UK, Earth, Commander Pligh completed his education at Royal School for High Achievers in London Central before joining the United Empire of Earth Navy as an Air Engineering Artificer. During his apprenticeship he served with 106, 110 and 120 Squadrons before selection for Officer training. He went on to read Astronautical Engineering at the Royal Space Engineering College and was selected for Test Pilot training. Completing his Certificate of Competence as an Aerospace Engineer Officer, he subsequently gained his Wings after Warfare pilot training with 705 and 810 SAS.
