What is Luminalia?
Luminalia is a holiday celebrated annually on December 22nd by both the Banu and Humans in the Star Citizen universe. It originated from the Banu festival tsikti efanga, or the Glow Festival, characterized by the lighting of ceremonial lamps that burn for approximately 2 Standard Earth Days.
Traditions and Celebrations
During Luminalia, all Banu are considered part of one Souli, inviting friends, business associates, and strangers into their homes to share gifts. Guests are expected to bring food, drinks, or party favors, and if they cannot, hosts often provide these items for purchase. The holiday has evolved to include gift exchanges, present hunts, glowing lights, food and drink, limited-time discounts, and gatherings decorated in green and red.
History
The origins of Luminalia are unknown due to the Banu's lack of historical records, but it has been celebrated since the Banu Protectorate's interactions with other civilizations. The festival gained popularity among Humans after the Banu-Human Interstellar Peace and Trade Accord in 2438. Notable events include a celebration on Trise I where Xi'an diplomats joined the festivities and another on Cestulus where Humans participated enthusiastically, leading to widespread adoption and media coverage.
Evolution and Modern Celebrations
By the 26th century, Luminalia had spread throughout the United Empire of Earth (UEE) and was officially added to the Human calendar in SEY 2557. Human corporations began mass-marketing holiday items, and the tradition of hiding empty gift-wrapped packages for surprises became popular. The holiday now includes night market events, private gatherings, and increased commercial activities, all contributing to its widespread celebration.
In-Game Celebrations
In the game Star Citizen, Luminalia is celebrated with special events, including the distribution of gift boxes, limited-time discounts, and a countdown calendar similar to an advent calendar. Players can participate in missions to deliver festive packages and engage in screenshot contests and holiday card design competitions.
