A friend Ron shared this method with me to identify ghost rocks (non scannable/minable) and locate Quantanium rock types from nearly 10km away. It's too good to keep to ourselves.
Hit your mining locale, and scan as you normally would (179-360°) to locate areas of interest. Position crosshairs directly on the indicated hit, and ping at 2-5° to resolve rocks to diamonds. Each diamond is a rock. If the hit doesn't resolve to diamonds; then it's not a minable/scannable rock (or is a hand/roc deposit) and can be skipped. Enter mining mode and position crosshairs on the diamond to identify rock type. Q type rocks are Quantanium deposits.
It really helps to bind buttons to increase/decrease ping angles. Or use a voiceattack command.
The default keybind to increase ping angle is comma, decrease ping is period key.
