The Oso system is a Fair Chance Act-protected planetary system that consists of an F-type main sequence star, three terrestrial planets, one gas giant, one ice giant, and one dwarf planet. Discovered in 2861 by amateur explorer Errol Navis, who named it after his daughter, it seemed to be an excellent prospect for terraforming until a young civilization was detected on Oso II. Barred from their development plans, some surveying corporations leaked their planetary assessment findings to the press in an attempt to convince the public that it was the United Empire of Earth's duty to open the system. From these leaks, a popular movement formed in favor of uplifting the intelligent Osoians. Ultimately, the Senate chose to invoke the Fair Chance Act and set up a permanent military station to keep the system safe from potentially unscrupulous visitors.
