The 551st Wolf Pack from its humble beginnings with its first deployment, this group which has a long and rich lineage dates back over 1000 years by Earth Standard Time (EST). It began at first as a bomber squadron in WWII as and evolved over the century to fit the needs of whatever the governing body at the time needed them to do. What this meant for the members of the 551st and every incarnation that they had done everything from exploring, support of planetary terraforming operations, planetary defense or carrier based operations.
Activated in late 1942 as a B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bomb squadron, trained under Second Air Force. Deployed to England in the European Theater of Operations (ETO) during June 1943, assigned to VIII Bomber Command as a strategic bombardment squadron under the 385th bomb group. Participated in the air offensive over Nazi Germany and Occupied Europe until German capitulation in May 1945. Personnel demobilized in England and returned to the United States; squadron reassigned to Second Air Force and was programmed to be re-equipped with B-29 Superfortresses for deployment to Pacific Theater. Japanese capitulation led to units inactivation in September 1945, being neither manned or equipped.
Effective 15 September 1947, the squadron was activated at Selfridge Field, Michigan. Having been allotted to the organized reserves, with assignment to Second Air Force, Air Defense Command, it was redesigned as a very heavy bombardment unit on 25 August. In August 1948, the squadron was assigned to the Tenth Air Force, which in December, became a part of the Continental Air Command. On 1 December 1948 it was again reassigned to Air Defense Command where it remained on reserve service until being inactivated on 27 June 1949 due to budget restrictions.
Reactivated in 1960 as a Strategic Air Command SM-65F Atlas ICBM launch squadron, stationed at Lincoln AFB, Nebraska and assigned to the 818th Air (later Strategic Aerospace) Division on 1 April 1961. The squadron was assigned twelve missiles, based in a 1 × 12 configuration: twelve independent widely dispersed launch sites comprised the missile squadron.
The Atlas F was the final and most advanced version of the Atlas ICBM and was stored in a vertical position inside underground concrete and steel silos. When stored, the Atlas F sat atop an elevator. If a missile was placed on alert, it was fueled with RP-1 (kerosene) liquid fuel, which could be stored inside the missile for extended periods. If a decision was made to launch the missile, the missile was raised to the surface and the liquid oxygen tank was filled. The launch would occur shortly after completion of this process.
The exposure on the surface that this procedure entailed was the great weakness of the Atlas F. It was exposed and vulnerable during this time. The Titan II and Minuteman missiles could be launched from within their silos, thereby eliminating this vulnerability. Also, since the Titan did not use a cryogenic fuel or oxidizer, and the Minuteman was a solid fuel rocket, they could be stored fully fueled and ready to launch within a very few minutes.
The 551st SMS operated twelve launch silos; one missile at each site. The missiles were retired and removed in early 1965 in favor of the more advanced LGM-25C Titan II; squadron was inactivated on 25 June 1965. Missile sites were later sold off to private ownership after demilitarization.
Reactivated on 3 August 2542, during the first war with the Tevarin the 551st Wolf Pack was a reserve defense squadron on Terra. Though they didn’t actually fight in that first war and the battlegrounds never reached as far as Terra they were still playing an important role in the security of Terra if anything had gone wrong and reached that far. Inactivated on 27 June 2558.
Reactivated activated, 16 January 2604, during the second Tevarin war as a Torpedo Bomber Squadron this time they played a more active role, the 551st Wolf Pack was assigned to the U.P.E. carrier Sojourn where they flew many sorties against the Tevarin capital ships. The group took part in the Battle of Cantauri and also pursued and disabled (5) Tevarin capital ship and credited with destroying (3) as the Tervarin remaining fleet made there charge to Elysium IV formally known as Kaleeth (Tevarin former home world). Inactivated on 28 March 2616.
Reactivated, 21 May 2686, shortly after the first Vanduul raids the 551st Wolf Pack was reactivated as a patrol group with medium fighters Inactivated on 3 April 2733. Then later heavy fighters activated, 28 May 2733, during this time they were assigned too many ships and many planets that they would deploy from.
However, none were as memorable as the U.E.E. carrier the Phoenix. Which the name was rightfully deserved for the Phoenix was in fact an older U.P.E. carrier from the last century from the second Tevarin war that was brought back into service and retrofitted to fill a new role. Even though the Phoenix wasn’t as beautiful and was smaller than her younger sisters she still filled the role for what she was repurposed for and that was a patrol carrier. Which during this time the U.E.E. military was stretched so thin bracing for what they thought was an inevitable military conflict with the Xi’An along with trying to deal with Vanduul raiders and maintain security in human systems. Inactivated on 26 October 2795
Today the 551st Wolf Pack is inactive in the U.E.E. Navy, but that hasn’t stopped descendants and past pilots alike from this long standing group that still feel the pride and honor of the group name and their heritage which is linked to it. Today the 551st Wolf Pack is a private military company, even though they aren’t officially part of the U.E.E. they still feel they can support them by supporting there citizens and providing security services.
