History

Aether Asylum: A History

Aether Asylum’s history is a winding road through the fringes of known space, marked by a unique blend of opportunism, law-bending, and a surprisingly strong internal code.

Origins:

The organization’s roots can be traced back to the early days of widespread interstellar travel. A small group of independent spacers, disillusioned with the rigid structures of the UEE (United Empire of Earth) and drawn to the lucrative, if risky, opportunities in less regulated systems, formed the core of what would become Aether Asylum. The name itself reflects their initial philosophy: “Aether” representing the vast, untamed expanse of space, and “Asylum” signifying a place of refuge for those who didn’t quite fit into mainstream society.

Early Years: The Shadow Trade

In its formative years, Aether Asylum primarily engaged in what could be generously termed “shadow trade.” This involved:

Salvage and Acquisition: Recovering valuable cargo from derelict ships or abandoned settlements, often in disputed or dangerous territories.

Smuggling: Transporting goods through less-traveled routes, evading customs and tariffs. This included everything from rare minerals and advanced technology to… less reputable commodities.

Information Brokerage: Gathering and selling sensitive information, sometimes obtained through less-than-legal means.

While not always strictly legal, Aether Asylum operated with a degree of discretion and avoided unnecessary violence. They saw themselves as navigators of the gray areas, providing essential services to those operating outside the UEE’s sphere of influence.

The Rise of Piracy:

As Aether Asylum’s influence grew, so did the temptation to engage in more direct forms of acquisition. While the organization maintained that it was not a “pirate” outfit, its members became increasingly involved in activities that blurred the lines:

“Requisitions”: The organization developed a reputation for “requisitioning” cargo from vessels deemed to be operating unethically or in violation of local agreements. This justification, however, was often subjective.

Defense and Deterrence: Aether Asylum invested heavily in heavily armed and modified ships, ostensibly for defense against hostile elements. These vessels also served as a powerful deterrent to those who might be reluctant to part with their cargo.

Strategic Raids: On occasion, the organization conducted well-planned raids on lightly defended convoys or outposts, targeting specific high-value goods.

It’s important to note that Aether Asylum, even in its most audacious operations, adhered to a peculiar code of conduct. Unnecessary civilian casualties were generally avoided, and targets were often chosen based on a complex (and sometimes self-serving) moral calculus.

Aether Asylum in Star Citizen:

In the current era of Star Citizen, Aether Asylum continues to thrive as a significant player in the ‘verse. The organization’s activities have expanded to encompass:

Large-Scale Trading: Leveraging their extensive network and resources, Aether Asylum engages in legitimate (and sometimes less legitimate) trade across the Stanton system and beyond.

Mercenary Operations: Providing security and combat services to clients, often in high-risk environments. This includes everything from escorting valuable cargo to participating in large-scale conflicts.

Exploration and Resource Acquisition: Venturing into uncharted territories to discover new resources and opportunities.

Information Warfare: Gathering and disseminating intelligence, playing a key role in the complex political landscape of the ‘verse.

Aether Asylum remains a controversial organization. To some, they are outlaws and criminals, preying on the vulnerable and undermining the rule of law. To others, they are pragmatic survivors, filling a necessary role in a chaotic and often unjust universe. The truth, as is often the case, lies somewhere in the gray area that Aether Asylum has always called home.

Manifesto

Aether Asylum is a legendary space organization known for walking the fine line between law and chaos in the vast depths of the cosmos. Operating from the shadows of the galaxy, Aether Asylum specializes in space piracy, bending the laws of the established order to chase freedom and fortune among the stars.

While some see them as rebels and outlaws, others recognize their skillful trade in rare contraband and valuable resources, often trading in the vibrant universe of Star Citizen. Their members are daring, unpredictable, and fiercely independent, driven by a desire to reshape the boundaries of space law and carve out their own destiny among the celestial mysteries.

In the chaos of starry skies, Aether Asylum stands as a symbol of rebellion, ingenuity, and the relentless pursuit of freedom beyond the bounds of conventional law.

Charter

Aether Asylum Pirate Charter

This charter outlines the code of conduct for all members of Aether Asylum engaged in operations that strategically navigate, and when necessary, subvert the boundaries of UEE law. While the organization values individual autonomy and initiative, these guidelines are essential for maintaining cohesion, maximizing profitability, and ensuring the long-term survival of Aether Asylum in a complex legal landscape.

I. Core Principles

Profitability: The pursuit of profit is paramount. All actions should be weighed against their potential for financial gain, with calculated consideration given to the associated legal risks and rewards.

Discretion: Operate with a degree of stealth and cunning. Avoid unnecessary attention from UEE authorities and rival organizations, but recognize that calculated displays of force may be necessary to achieve objectives.

Resourcefulness: Adapt to changing circumstances and leverage all available tools and information, both legal and illicit, to achieve objectives.

Loyalty: Uphold the bonds of camaraderie within Aether Asylum. Protect the interests of your fellow members, especially when operating in legally precarious situations.

Autonomy: Exercise independent judgment in the field, but remain accountable for your actions to the organization, with a clear understanding of the legal ramifications.

II. Rules of Conduct

Target Selection:

Cargo vessels, transports, and lightly defended outposts are preferred targets.

Priority should be given to targets carrying high-value goods, rare materials, or valuable information.

Attacks on civilian vessels are generally discouraged, unless exceptional circumstances warrant otherwise (e.g., self-defense, high-value cargo, or strategic necessity). The potential legal repercussions of such actions must be carefully weighed.

“Requisitions” from targets engaged in unethical or illegal activities are permissible, but must be carefully documented. The definition of “unethical” and “illegal” may be interpreted broadly to serve the organization’s interests.

Use of Force:

Force should be used judiciously and only to achieve mission objectives.

Minimize collateral damage and unnecessary destruction, but recognize that collateral damage may be unavoidable in certain situations.

Capturing vessels and cargo intact is preferable to destruction, whenever feasible.

Unnecessary violence against crew members is prohibited. Surrendering crews should be treated with a degree of professional courtesy, unless they pose a significant threat or possess valuable intelligence.

Division of Spoils:

All acquired assets (ships, cargo, information, etc.) are to be considered property of Aether Asylum.

A fair and equitable system for the division of spoils will be determined based on the risks undertaken, resources expended, and contributions made by each member involved in the operation. This system will also take into account the legal risks incurred by each member.

The organization will maintain a share of all acquired assets to fund operations, acquire resources, and support the membership. A portion of these funds will be set aside for legal defense and mitigation of potential UEE sanctions.

Information Handling:

All sensitive information acquired during operations is to be treated with the utmost confidentiality.

The unauthorized disclosure of information that could jeopardize Aether Asylum, its members, or its operations is strictly prohibited.

Information may be sold or traded to trusted third parties, provided that such transactions do not compromise the organization’s interests. This includes the sale of information to parties operating outside UEE law.

Inter-Organization Relations:

Aether Asylum will maintain a policy of cautious neutrality towards other organizations, both legal and illegal.

Alliances of convenience may be formed when strategically advantageous, but should be entered into with careful consideration and a clear understanding of the terms. These alliances may include organizations with questionable legal standing.

Conflicts with other organizations should be avoided whenever possible, but will be met with decisive force when necessary to protect Aether Asylum’s interests. This includes preemptive strikes when deemed necessary to maintain the organization’s security and profitability.

UEE Law:

Members are expected to be aware of and operate within the boundaries of UEE law, to the extent that it serves the interests of Aether Asylum. However, members are also authorized to operate outside UEE law when necessary to achieve organizational objectives.

Evading UEE authorities is a necessary skill. Members are encouraged to develop proficiency in smuggling, electronic warfare, and other methods of circumventing law enforcement. This includes the acquisition and use of countermeasures, forged identification, and other tools necessary to evade detection and prosecution.

Capture by UEE forces should be avoided at all costs. Members are expected to prioritize self-preservation and the protection of organizational assets. This may include the use of force, deception, or negotiation.

III. Amendments

This charter is a living document and may be amended as necessary to adapt to changing circumstances and the evolving needs of Aether Asylum. All members have the right to propose amendments, which will be considered by the organization’s leadership.
