History
Battelle Memorial Institute began from Gordon Battelle’s bequest in the 1920s and grew into a major nonprofit applied‑science organization in Columbus, Ohio, known for work in metallurgy, nuclear technology, materials, environmental remediation, and managing national labs. Over the next centuries, its control of advanced materials, bioengineering, and infrastructure contracts let it absorb security forces and militarize, becoming a quasi‑sovereign technocratic power.
