History

The Channel 4 News Team and the White Smoke Across the Galaxies

Long before the galaxies were connected by wormhole relays and faster-than-light broadcasts, every star system told its own version of the truth. Some planets believed the universe was ending. Others believed it had never begun. Most were simply arguing over weather, sports, and whether the asteroid tolls were too high.

Then came the Channel 4 News Team.

They were not soldiers, diplomats, or priests. They were reporters: underpaid, overdressed, dangerously confident, and somehow always first on the scene. Their ship, the Evening Edition, was an aging broadcast cruiser with a cracked teleprompter, a coffee machine that had achieved sentience, and a transmitter powerful enough to interrupt a supernova.

Their mission began on the ash-covered moon of Vaticar IX, where an ancient interstellar conclave had been deadlocked for 400 years. The galaxies were waiting for a sign that peace had finally been chosen. Traditionally, that sign was white smoke, released from the tallest tower of the conclave citadel.

But the tower had been destroyed. The priests were missing. The diplomats were panicking. The universe was one bad headline away from war.

So the Channel 4 News Team did what no respectable journalists should ever do:

They became the story.

Using a busted weather cannon, three emergency smoke cartridges, and a suspiciously powerful hair-spray reserve, they launched a plume of brilliant white smoke into orbit. Their ship’s transmitter caught the signal, amplified it through the old news satellites, and spread it system by system until every planet saw the same image:

white smoke drifting across the stars.

To some, it meant peace.
To others, unity.
To the news team, it meant they had about twelve minutes before anyone asked whether they had permission.

From that day forward, whenever the galaxies fall into chaos, people look to the skies for the pale signal of hope. And somewhere out there, the Channel 4 News Team is already broadcasting live, wearing perfect suits, mispronouncing alien names, and bringing the white smoke wherever the universe needs a miracle.

Their slogan became legendary:

“Across the galaxies, when the smoke is white, the news is right.”
