“The Verse Made Us This Way.”

History

The Disgruntled Deadhead Society (DDHS) traces its roots to the closing years of the Vanduul War, when countless veterans of the United Empire of Earth Navy and UEE Marine Corps returned home to a civilization that had already begun to forget the price paid on the frontier. Many of these soldiers had spent years fighting brutal boarding actions, escorting supply convoys through dangerous systems, and defending humanity’s borders from the relentless incursions of the Vanduul.

When their tours ended, they discovered that the United Empire of Earth had little waiting for them beyond paperwork, empty speeches, and shrinking veteran support programs. Frontier deployments had hardened them, and many struggled to reintegrate into the orderly, bureaucratic life of the core worlds. Some lost their careers. Others lost their homes. Many lost their faith in the institutions they once swore to defend.

Rather than fade quietly into obscurity, a handful of these veterans began meeting in forgotten bars and cargo docks across the fringe systems—places like Pyro system and the outer stations of the Stanton system. What started as informal gatherings of war-weary soldiers sharing drinks and stories slowly evolved into something more structured: a brotherhood built on shared hardship, loyalty, and the understanding that the only people they could truly rely on were each other.

The name Disgruntled Deadhead Society began as a dark joke among the founding members. “Deadheads” was the nickname given to boarding crews who frequently faced near-certain death during ship assaults in the war. “Disgruntled” reflected their collective bitterness toward the government that had discarded them once they were no longer useful. Over time, the name stuck—becoming a badge of honor rather than a complaint.

Operating primarily on the edges of lawful space, the Society gradually formed into a loose but capable organization of pilots, gunners, mechanics, and tacticians. While not strictly lawful in the eyes of the UEE, DDHS members follow their own code rooted in the discipline of their military past. They value loyalty to fellow veterans above all else and are known to fiercely defend allies who earn their trust.

In the modern era of the ’Verse, the Disgruntled Deadhead Society serves as both a refuge and a purpose for those who once fought humanity’s wars. Some run escort contracts. Others salvage abandoned wrecks from battlefields long forgotten. A few embrace piracy against the corporations and bureaucracies they believe exploit the very people who once bled for the Empire.

To outsiders, they are unpredictable and dangerous.

To their members, they are family.

And in the unforgiving black between the stars, family is the only thing that truly matters.

Manifesto

The Disgruntled Deadhead Society (DDHS) exists to give purpose, camaraderie, and agency to those veterans who once bled for the United Empire of Earth, yet were left behind when the guns fell silent. Our members are bound not by law, but by loyalty—loyalty to one another and to the ideals that the Empire failed to uphold for us.

Our Intentions:

To create a safe haven for veterans of the Vanduul War and other frontier conflicts, where their skills, stories, and experiences are valued.

To reclaim a sense of agency in a galaxy that often disregards those who protect it.

To operate in the ‘Verse on our own terms, pursuing contracts, salvage, and ventures that honor our legacy without bowing to bureaucracy or hollow authority.

Our Motives:

To maintain the brotherhood forged in war, ensuring that no veteran faces the void alone.

To challenge those who exploit, oppress, or betray those who served, using whatever means necessary while adhering to our own code.

To prove that experience, skill, and honor cannot be measured by the UEE’s recognition alone.

Our Views:

We respect competence, courage, and loyalty above all else. Those who earn our trust become allies; those who betray it face our full resolve.

We do not blindly follow the dictates of the UEE or corporations—they failed us once, and we will not fail ourselves again.

While the galaxy is chaotic and dangerous, we believe in creating order within our ranks and fairness within our sphere of influence.

The Disgruntled Deadhead Society is more than a name—it is a testament to resilience, a sanctuary for the forgotten, and a warning to those who would underestimate the veterans of the frontier. We are not lost. We are not defeated. We are the Deadheads.

Charter

The Disgruntled Deadhead Society (DDHS) is built on honor among those the UEE left behind. While we operate on the edges of law and bureaucracy, every member is expected to uphold the principles that keep our brotherhood strong and our reputation respected. These are the rules that guide every Deadhead in the ’Verse:

Loyalty Above All: Protect and support fellow members at all costs. Brotherhood is the foundation of our existence.

Honor in Action: Even in the chaos of conflict or salvage, act with skill, discipline, and fairness within the Society. Betrayal is not tolerated.

Respect the Code: Follow the internal DDHS code—decisions are made collectively, and the chain of trust must be respected.

No Exploitation of the Weak: We do not prey on the defenseless. Our aggression is reserved for those who pose a threat to our members or violate the trust of the ’Verse.

Defend the Forgotten: Assist fellow veterans and those abandoned by the UEE whenever possible.

Maintain Competence: Each member is responsible for maintaining their skills and equipment. A Deadhead is only as strong as their readiness.

Discretion and Secrecy: Protect the Society’s operations, members, and allies. Information is a weapon—use it wisely.

Respect Territory and Alliances: Conflicts and disputes are settled internally before outside escalation. Trust and caution govern all external interactions.

Embrace the Frontier Spirit: Adapt, improvise, and survive. The ’Verse is unforgiving, and so are we—but ingenuity and courage are rewarded.

Carry the Legacy: Remember that every action reflects the Society. Honor our history and ensure the Deadheads’ name remains respected and feared where it matters.

These rules are not just guidelines—they are the lifeblood of the Disgruntled Deadhead Society. Those who abide by them earn trust, camaraderie, and a place among the veterans who refuse to be forgotten.
