Her Majesty's Intergalactic Empire / HMIE

Ruled by the ever graceful Elizabeth II, HMIE is a vast empire that has been at the forefront of exploration, colonisation and industry since the dawn of space travel.

In the year 2045, Great Britain established a base on the moon and in doing so, became the first nation to claim and colonise a celestial body. Many countries disputed this claim, saying that it was a direct violation of the Outer Space Treaty. Tensions rose amongst nations which sparked the United Kingdom to rapidly expand across the surface of the moon. A capital city was established, and for some reason, Boris Johnson was appointed as the mayor, where he proceeded to spend the next several years spending the entire budget covering the moon with cycle routes. The unruly spending of the mayor lead to the creation of a dedicated celestial government, and so was born HMIE.

By the year 2055, tensions were at an all time high; the USA were demanding territory, Russia was still not invading parts of Eastern Europe and North Korea were still threatening the world with nuclear weapons. To alleviate the pressure, HMIE organised the first space Olympics.

The games were a great success, but were estimated to have costed the taxpayer nearly £869 billion pounds, nearly doubling the national debt. Facing extreme scrutiny, Boris Johnson was forced to sell off parts of the moon to the USA and Russia and was given a right dishonourable expulsion. No one knows exactly what happened to Boris at this point, but rumour has it that he can still be seen cycling around the moon trying to tame his unruly hair to this day.

With three major powers now on the moon, a new treaty was formed: The Outer Space Special Proposition Outline Treaty (TOSSPOT).

TOSSPOT outlined new rules for space exploration with a view to avoid further potential conflict. The most prominent of which being ‘finders keepers lol’. This sparked the great space race of 2064 where many nations claimed as many planets as quickly as possible.

Over the next eleven years, most of the planets in the solar system were claimed and rapid advances in technology saw smaller countries entering the space race. These smaller countries were often left with asteroids and small moons, which were seen as useless to the larger nations, but were quickly introduced to freedom and democracy when the USA discovered that they were rich with Platinum and Osmium, which were crucial elements in the production of space ship engines. Interestingly, a small band of Scottish citizens somehow managed to occupy Pluto and finally managed to gain their independence from the UK, to which Her Majesty replied: “Keep it, it’s not even a real planet”.

During the same decade Roberts Space Industries made a critical breakthrough in quantum core engines. This new technology allowed space travel to the edges of the solar system. Once again, a space race began which lead to an exponential growth of the human population and the technology that it was creating.

Since then, HMIE has become established as a major power and has terraformed eighteen planets. Although the beginnings of the empire were turbulent, HMIE is seen by many as the epitome of modern society that embodies peace, technology and fair trade for all.
