The Intergalactic Aerospace Expo (IAE) stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of innovation and exploration in the Star Citizen universe. From its humble beginnings as a showcase for a single experimental ship to its current status as the premier aerospace event in the galaxy, the IAE has evolved alongside the very technology it celebrates. As we approach IAE 2954, it’s worth taking a look back at the rich history of this iconic event and how it has shaped the aerospace industry in the Star Citizen universe.
The story of the IAE begins in 2670 on the planet Castor. Inventor Audrey Timmerman, driven by a passion for aerospace technology, organized the first expo to introduce his experimental ship, the Poby. This inaugural event was small in scale but grand in vision, setting the stage for what would become a galactic institution.
In these formative years, the IAE was a nomadic affair, moving from system to system as it sought to establish its identity. The expo’s wandering nature allowed it to reach a diverse audience, spreading excitement for new aerospace technologies across the galaxy. Notable early sponsors included the New Junction Ship Emporium in 2675, which helped elevate the event’s profile among industry insiders.
A significant turning point came in 2683 when Roberts Space Industries (RSI) took over as the primary sponsor of the IAE. Under RSI’s stewardship, the expo found a semi-permanent home at the Agustin Exposition Hall on Lo. This period of stability allowed the IAE to grow in both size and prestige.
The rise of the Messer regime brought significant changes to the IAE. AEGIS Dynamics, a company favored by the new government, became the primary sponsor. This shift in sponsorship reflected the broader changes happening across the UEE, as the Messer regime sought to consolidate its power and influence.
During this period, the IAE became a tool for promoting regime-approved companies and technologies. The event’s focus narrowed, with less emphasis on innovation and more on showcasing military might and regime-sanctioned advancements.
This politicization of the expo led to Audrey Timmerman’s retirement in 2715. The founder of the IAE, disillusioned with the event’s new direction, chose to step away rather than see his creation used as a propaganda tool.
The fall of the Messer regime in 2792 ushered in a new era for the IAE. Freed from the constraints of authoritarian control, the expo once again embraced its role as a showcase for innovation across the aerospace industry.
The year 2913 marked a low point in IAE history with the “disastrous” expo on Asura. The chosen location proved woefully inadequate, lacking the necessary infrastructure to host an event of the IAE’s magnitude. Attendees faced numerous logistical challenges, from insufficient accommodations to inadequate facilities for ship demonstrations.
The Asura debacle prompted the IAE board of directors to seek a permanent home for the event. They recognized that the expo had outgrown its nomadic roots and required a dedicated location that could meet its ever-expanding needs.
In 2916, former Governor of Severus, Joona Tzur, successfully lobbied the IAE board to establish Eri City on Kiel as the permanent home of the expo. This decision marked the beginning of the modern era of the IAE.
As we look forward to IAE 2954, the event continues to be a cornerstone of the Star Citizen experience. It offers players unparalleled opportunities to explore the latest in spacecraft technology, from nimble fighters to massive capital ships. The expo has also become a social hub, where players can meet, share experiences, and plan their next adventures in the ‘verse.
The future of the IAE looks bright, with potential for further expansion and innovation. As Star Citizen’s universe continues to grow, so too will the scope and scale of this iconic event. From its humble beginnings on Castor to its current status as a galactic phenomenon, the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo remains at the forefront of aerospace innovation, a testament to the enduring human spirit of exploration and technological advancement.
Star Citizen is playable in Alpha right now. Jump in the verse’ today and see what traversing a star system is like, with no loading screens from ground to space, to interplanetary travel.
