History

Origin of the Lusitans

It all began on earth…. Considered to be an indigenous population that came to be dominated by Celts before regaining independence from them. On the other hand, the archaeologist Scarlat Lambrino proposed that they were originally a tribal group of Celtic origin related to the Lusones of Saefs origin, in central Europe. Classical sources also mention Lusitan leader Viriathus as the leader of the Celtiberians, in their war against the Romans. The Greco-Roman historian Diodorus Siculus attributed them a name of a Germanic tribe: “Those who are called Lusitans are the bravest of all Cimbri”. The Lusitans were also called Belitans, according to the diviner Artemidorus. Strabo differentiated the Lusitans from the Iberian tribe. Pliny the Elder and Pomponius Mela distinguished the Lusitans from neighboring Celtic groups in their geographical writings. The first area settled by the Lusitans was probably the Douro Valley and the region of Beira Alta; then they moved south, and expanded on both sides of the Tagus River, before being conquered by the Romans. The original Roman province of Lusitania briefly included the territories of Asturia and Gallaecia, but these were soon ceded to the jurisdiction of the Provincia Tarraconensis in the north, while the south remained the Provincia Lusitania et Vettones. After this, Lusitania’s northern border was along the Douro River, while its eastern border passed through Salmantica and Caesarobriga to the Anas river.

Culture

Categorising Lusitan culture generally, including the language, is proving difficult. Some believe it was essentially a pre-Celtic Iberian culture with substantial Celtic influences, while others argue that it was an essentially Celtic culture with strong indigenous pre-Celtic influences. Lusitans lived in round and rectangular houses with a single floor, made of stones. Their clothes were made of wool or of goat skin. They wore necklaces, bracelets, and other jewelry made of gold. They made their jewels using a filigree method, or by hammering. Wine was only used in festivities, and they usually drank water, goats’ milk, and beer. Lusitans practiced monogamy and lived in a primitive social organization, which appears to be linked to the Atlantic Late Bronze Age. They used boats made of leather or harvested lumber. They used anointing-rooms twice a day and took baths in vapors that rose from heated stones, then bathed in cold water. They practiced gymnastic exercises such as boxing and racing. They sacrificed goats, horses, and human prisoners to Cariocecus, god of war. In battles with the Romans, Lusitans gained a reputation as fierce fighters. They used weapons such as the dagger, the iron javelin, the falcata, and the brass spear. Roman records attest to their presence among Carthaginian mercenaries in battles in the Pyrenees.

Later on…

To leave becomes the necessary adventure: the destiny, the humus of being Lusitan, the essence of its identity.. After conquering the land, the sea becomes the missing element in the History of the Country.. Other people made their voyage on land searching for a promised land. The Lusitan set their land frontiers to the point where the sea begins. And it was precisely on that point that the dream started being built: the distant line of the unknown and promising horizon… after conquering the land we had to conquer the sea. The voyage of the Lusitans had to be by sea. That was the missing experience, the waters yet to be discovered, synonymous of the knowledge yet to conquer. “By making the oceans sailable the Lusitans went beyond the geographical fantasies of the Middle Ages and Humankind became aware of the totality of their space of the round earth. A new world was just emerging, History leapt forward.” The contribution of the Lusitan voyages acquires thus a universal value. With the new routes and the new maps the world gets definite contours. The Lusitan seafarer, sailing on a dream, went beyond every horizon: the night and the haze were illuminated by the unknown truth. The dream nurtures the imagination and moves hope and will. These emotions will be present at the times of fear and danger that come with every journey. That’s how the hero faces every obstacle and, above all, faces fear. The hero does not fear: he boldly faces fear. The Lusitans sailed the seas that had never been sailed before. Theirs was a long and doubtful way. But the Lusitan voyage may embody a broader vision. The voyage of the Lusitans were on the water.

After many years of troubles and deceptions, the brave and proud Lusitan people turn their eyes to the infinite of space travel.
We begin therefore the exploration of space, because thats what we are, thats what is imprinted in our dna. The success in exploration, but things are different now because we are not sailing in water, we are sailing in the vaccum of space itself and a new era begins for us and for everyone in the universe……
