☼   Praise Ocean Man!              ☼

Ocean Man,

Take me by the hand,

Lead me to the land,

That you understand.

- Chief Prophet Aaron Freeman
  The Mollusk, 37:27

History

One thousand years ago, our forefathers and chief prophets of the faith of Oceanism began to realize and document their spiritual discoveries in the form of musical renditions. From what is best documented, these depictions spread relatively far with moderate public acclaim, and would lay the foundation for the system of beliefs that would later make up the core aspects of Oceanism.

The earliest full and intact version of one of these recordings dates back to one of the decades leading up to the 21st century, taking the moniker “The Mollusk”. Its creators, the congregation known as Ween — meaning to ponder or to hope — are essentially known to have been the sole group responsible for charting all of the fundamental principles of the faith.

The Ween congregation is known to have consisted of eight prophets — David Dreiwitz, Claudius Coleman II, Glenn McClelland, Andrew Weiss, Marcus Kramer, and Gordon Rodnick, alongside chief prophets Micheal Melchiondo II and Aaron Freeman. In their completed forms, Freeman acted as the primary orator in the transmission of the messages presented in these early renditions of Oceanistic ideals. Other important chronicles would follow the guise of The Mollusk, such as White Pepper and Québec, also spearheaded by the oration of Freeman. However, the concepts presented in the earliest would prove most critical to the development of Oceanism as a faith.

From the mid-21st century onward, the fate of the classical Oceanistic renditions and the original eight prophets would fall into obscurity, but not to the abyssal clutches of time. As humanity grew technologically, so would the teachings of the original eight prophets. By the conclusion of the terraforming of Mars in the year 2157, a mere century after the ideals of Oceanism had been presumed dead, the opposite could not have been closer to reality.

Cornelius Freeman III, a descendant of chief prophet Aaron Freeman, had been one of the many head scientists present at the grand opening of inhabitable Mars. His influence as a scientist as well as an enlightened scholar and orator opened the door for the first widespread adoption of Oceanism, on Martian soil. Taking the fragmented pieces of history and teachings salvaged from his ancestor, Cornelius shaped them into a proper ideology with a basic set of commandments and rules of thumb, echoing back to Chinese Confucian ideals of centuries past.

Oceanism quickly grew on those willing enough to embrace it, sparking its introduction as a faith relevant to human society. As humanity expanded outward to the vast reaches of space, so did Oceanism. War, uprisings, and social struggles did not damage the faith, but rather popularized it through its existence as an alternative to the bleaker forms of existentialism that arose in these hard times. Struggles came and went, but the ideals of Oceanism remained alive. It is through this hope and perseverance that the teachings of Ween continue to grow and prosper after almost a millennia.

Manifesto

Overview

The Ocean Man Caliphate is a body focused on leading people toward spiritual enlightenment with the grand vastness of space. We are driven by the passion that exists within the human mind to seek out truth, knowledge, wisdom, and power. While it is true in the classical sense that the term “caliphate” refers to an empire, in this sense it refers to the expanse of our beliefs and ideals pertaining to existence and the universe, rather than the acquisition of land and resources on a massive scale as in the more traditional definition.

Pillars of Oceanism

Oceanism follows a number of different tenets that can be adhered to at varying degrees.

I. The supreme deity of Oceanism, Ocean Man, represents the vast expanse of space that is and has yet to be discovered. To connect with Ocean Man means to recognize his existence, as a resonating force (such as the Force in Star Wars) that connects with all those who seek out his guidance, wisdom, and power. It is customary that those who conduct themselves more devoutly toward Ocean Man receive a greater positive karmic aura, or luck in layman’s terms.

II. There are various ways of worshiping Ocean Man, but forms not sanctioned by the fundamental teachings of Oceanism are considered a form of blasphemy. To properly pay homage to Ocean Man, one must clearly recite lines from the verse “Ocean Man” from The Mollusk in any form or fashion, so long as such recitals do not alter the original text. The most common form of verbal worship goes as the first four lines of this verse (quoted above).
