OPERATIONAL STRUCTURE:

The main Cohortes Praetoriae Fleet Cohort is the combined efforts of multiple Centuria. These Centuria are formed of various capital ships and any combination of the following squadrons:

Exploratores:

Those who serve within the ranks of the Exploratores are the scouts and reconnaissance for both their respective Centuria and the larger Fleet Cohort as a whole. The Exploratores are tasked with providing safe navigation for the Fleet Cohort during manoeuvres, securing jump points and landing zones for planetary assaults. The Exploratores always remain vigil to both the presence of the Vanduul and pirates and evaluate the threat they pose to the Fleet Cohort.

Velites:

Often the frontline of the Fleet Cohort, the highly mobile force of Velites typically act as a screening force, driving off enemy patrols and disrupting enemy formations before retiring behind the Fleet Cohort as the Hastati engage the enemy. The Velites then interdict and disable any enemy targets that attempt to flee for reinforcements while continuing to harass and disrupt any exposed flanks of the enemy.

Hastati:

The staple of the Fleet Cohort the Hastati, often equipped with medium fighters and whose primary focus is dogfighting. The Hastati are tasked with establishing overall battlefield dominance against any enemy fighter presence in a zone. The Hastati are also responsible for the escort of the Fleet Cohort’s Triarii and Capital ships through any hostile space.

Principes:

Armed with heavy fighters and held is a secondary battle line until after the Velites have disrupted enemy formations, and the Hastati have engaged. The Principes are tasked with engaging the enemy where the fighting is most fierce as well as seeking out the destruction of any bomber vessel posing a threat to the Capital Ships. In the event that the Hastati should fail to break the enemy, they would fall back on the Principes.

Triarii:

If the Principes could not break them, they would retire behind the Triarii’s bombers who would then engage the enemy with superior firepower. In most battles the Triarii would not typically be used due to the fact the Hastati and Principes would usually defeat the enemy before the Triarii were committed to the battle. The Triarii are formed of elite crew capable of engaging significant enemy threats should the enemy field any capital ships. During the bitter fighting between fleets, “It comes down to the Triarii”.

Marinus:

While all crews are trained and have contingencies in place in the event of an enemy boarding party those who serve in the ranks of the Marinus dedicate themselves to Infantry combat. The Marinus are tasked with garrisoning Capital ships, Boarding enemy craft / stations and assaulting planetary positions. The Marinus often work hand in hand with other branches of the Fleet Cohort in combined arms operations.

Auxilia

In addition to the numerous combat orientated squadrons there are also the ranks of the Cohortes Praetoriae Auxilia. The Auxilia is a collective of the Fleet Cohort’s Logistical craft, and other essential non-combatants that enable the Fleet Cohort to enact its Duties. Often kept away from any active combat engagements the Auxilia is never without escort, guarded by the Hastati and surrounding areas actively scanned for pirate activity by the Exploratores. Only when a battle is won and the area is secure to the Auxilia arrive to rearm, refuel and repair friendly vessels, as well as carry out any salvage, mining, medical operations in any given theatre.
