During the great war against the Vanduul, a force of darkness emerged from the shadows of the empire.
The UEE having its forces decimated by the relentless onslaught of its enemies, was forced to bolster its ranks by the vilest of criminals, bloodthirsty pirates and ruthless terrorists.
The unit was constantly ordered to undertake high risk missions, was used as cannon fodder and sent to the furthest frontiers of the empire deep into Vanduul controlled space.

During a mission which was expected to have a high casualty rate yet again, the UEE underestimated the fact that the fleet was now comprised of battle hardened criminals who ended up massacring the Vanduul forces while taking far less casualties than expected.
In that very moment they rebelled against the UEE control forces, overwhelmed and destroyed them liberating themselves becoming the Black Rebel Fleet.
