History

The Birth of Griefing in Star Citizen

From the earliest days of Star Citizen’s alpha, the game’s promise of a fully immersive sandbox universe brought with it boundless opportunities for creativity, exploration, and cooperation. However, the open-world nature of the game also gave rise to a darker element: griefing.

Griefing, broadly defined as the deliberate harassment of other players to disrupt their experience, took on many forms in Star Citizen. From pad-ramming unsuspecting pilots to targeting trade convoys in high-traffic areas like Port Olisar or GrimHex, griefers exploited the lack of in-game protections to sow chaos. With little recourse for victims beyond reporting players—a process seen by many as slow and ineffective—griefing became an unchecked menace.

The Evolution of Organized Griefing

As the player base grew, so did the scale and coordination of griefing. Small bands of troublemakers evolved into organized groups dedicated to griefing as a form of gameplay. These groups often justified their actions under the guise of “emergent gameplay,” claiming that piracy, ambushes, and sabotage were within the spirit of the game.

Jumptown Wars: Dynamic events such as the Jumptown drug lab escalated griefing into organized warfare. Groups deliberately targeted solo players and smaller factions, monopolizing events and turning them into zones of despair.

Targeting New Players: Many organized griefing groups began focusing on new players, exploiting their lack of experience with the game’s mechanics to pad stats or gain notoriety.

Despite these challenges, griefing groups became infamous within the community, earning notoriety but also backlash for their actions.

Lack of Protections for Players

CIG (Cloud Imperium Games) provided some tools to mitigate griefing, such as the CrimeStat system and prison mechanics. However, these measures often fell short:

CrimeStat Workarounds: Griefers found ways to bypass CrimeStat penalties or weapon lock systems, leaving victims with little recourse.
Ineffective Reporting: Many players found the reporting process too slow, with enforcement actions coming long after the damage was done.
This gap left a vacuum for player-driven justice—an opportunity for groups to step up and defend those who could not defend themselves.

The Founding of “Righteous Kill”

“Righteous Kill” was born out of this chaos as a beacon of hope for the Star Citizen community. Recognizing the need for a focused response to not just griefing, but all predation, the organization was founded on the principles of justice, integrity, and protection.

Our mission is clear:

Defend the Vulnerable: Protect players from predation and harassment, particularly in high-traffic and high-risk zones.
Enforce Justice: Identify and neutralize predators while adhering to strict rules of engagement.
Promote Fair Play: Work to foster a community where gameplay is fun and fair for everyone.

By standing against predators and their organized groups, “Righteous Kill” seeks not only to combat predation but to set an example for the kind of universe Star Citizen can become—a universe where justice prevails, and no player is left to face predators alone.

Manifesto

We, the members of Righteous Kill, stand united against the forces of chaos and predation within the Star Citizen universe. With purpose, resolve, and unwavering commitment, we pledge to protect the sanctity of the gaming experience for all.

I. The Problem

The Star Citizen universe is vast, boundless, and filled with promise. Yet, within its star systems lies a persistent threat: griefers—those who prey on the vulnerable, disrupt commerce, and turn the joy of exploration into frustration. Organized griefing groups thrive on this disruption, exploiting systems and player inexperience to sow misery and fear.

This is not emergent gameplay. This is exploitation.
This is not freedom. This is oppression.
This is not acceptable.

Other forms of predation exist. We strongly oppose non-consensual PvP as we in RK define it, such as murder. We also oppose most forms of piracy, though we recognize that as a legitimate form of gameplay in the ‘verse.

II. Our Mission

Righteous Kill exists for one sole purpose: to punish predators with extreme prejudice. We are an organization born to bring balance and justice to the universe. Where predators thrive in the shadows, we will bring light. Where the helpless fall victim, we will be their shield. Where chaos reigns, we will restore order.

Our most fervent goal is that, someday, the ‘verse will not need us. That day is not today.

III. Our Principles

Justice Through Action
We will not stand idly by as predators prey on the innocent. Through decisive and calculated measures, we will identify, confront, and neutralize those who disrupt the peace of the Star Citizen community.

Integrity in Conflict
While we combat griefers and other predators, we hold ourselves to a higher standard. We engage only those who provoke, and we do so with precision to minimize harm to uninvolved parties. Our goal is justice, not indiscriminate retaliation.

Unity Among Players
We will foster alliances with like-minded individuals and organizations, creating a network of protection across the galaxy. Together, we will build a safer universe for miners, salvagers, traders, and all who value fair play.

Empowerment Through Education
Knowledge is a weapon. We will teach players to recognize all forms of predation, defend themselves, and utilize in-game tools to avoid harassment. Through education, we arm the community against its enemies.

Adaptation Against Threats
Predators evolve, and so will we. Through strategy, coordination, and innovation, Righteous Kill will stay one step ahead of organized harassment.

IV. Our Promise

Righteous Kill hears the frustration of miners, the salvagers, and those just seeking to make their way in the ‘verse in peace. We kill so they don’t have to.

V. Our Call to Action

To all citizens of the ‘verse who seek justice: join us.
To those who stand against griefing: stand with us.
To griefers who think they are untouchable: beware us.

We are Righteous Kill.

We are the protectors of the peace, the defenders of the downtrodden, and the bane of predators across the galaxy. Together, we will forge a universe where fun and fairness prevail, and where no griefer is left unchallenged.

Charter

As members of Righteous Kill, we pledge to uphold the values and mission of our organization. This charter outlines the rules and standards by which all members will abide to ensure our actions remain just, purposeful, and reflective of our commitment to combating griefing in Star Citizen.

Article I: Core Principles

Justice, Not Revenge
Members will act in response to verifiable griefing incidents, avoiding indiscriminate or retaliatory actions against uninvolved parties.

Integrity and Accountability
Members must conduct themselves with honor and transparency, reporting any questionable behavior within our ranks.

Respect for All Players
All players, including griefers, will be treated with basic respect. Personal attacks, slurs, or harassment are strictly forbidden.

Zero Tolerance for Bigotry
Righteous Kill strictly prohibits any form of bigotry. This includes, but is not limited to:

Racism
Sexism
Homophobia
Anti-Semitism
Islamophobia

Any violation of this principle will result in immediate disciplinary action, including potential removal from the organization.

Piracy is Not Griefing
While piracy is a part of the gameplay experience in Star Citizen, Righteous Kill does not view it as griefing. We understand that piracy is a legitimate game mechanic and part of the universe’s dynamic. While we will protect players from the consequences of piracy, such as unlawful interference with their trade or assets, piracy itself is not our main target and will not be considered an act of griefing.

Article II: Rules of Engagement (RoE)

Griefer Engagement Authorization

Members will engage only players who have been confirmed as griefers.
Evidence of griefing (e.g., video clips, eyewitness testimony, chat logs) should be presented whenever possible.

Minimizing Collateral Damage

Avoid harming neutral players or uninvolved ships during operations.
If collateral damage occurs, assist affected parties when reasonable.

Proportional Response

Use only the level of force necessary to neutralize the threat.

Ceasefire Conditions

If a predator surrenders or retreats, further aggression is unnecessary and discouraged unless they continue their predation. If the predator is a griefer and their griefing continues, griefers will be pursued until they leave the server, and there names will be added to the kill list if not already present.

Other Types of Engagements

Righteous Kill supports all form of gameplay that is within both CIG’s Terms of Service and our mission, including non-combat gameplay. As our motto is “Protect & Avenge”, we also will engage in PvE and PvP anti-piracy measures, bounty hunting, and protection services. Rules for these kinds of engagements are specified in the RK Handbook.

Article III: Membership Responsibilities

Support and Collaboration

Members will work together to protect and escort vulnerable players, provide escorts, and patrol high-risk areas.
Internal disputes between members will be resolved respectfully through mediation by leadership.

Commitment to Education

Members will share knowledge and resources with the community to help others avoid predation.

Adherence to Organizational Strategy

Follow directives from leadership during operations to maintain coordination and effectiveness.
Rogue actions that contradict the organization’s mission are grounds for review and potential dismissal.

Article IV: Prohibited Conduct

Griefing of Any Kind
Members are forbidden from engaging in the same behavior we stand against. Engaging in such behavior will lead to immediate dismissal.

Exploitation of Bugs or Glitches
Using exploits to gain an unfair advantage is unacceptable. Report such issues to CIG instead.

Theft from the Innocent
Piracy or theft of goods recovered from pirates is not allowed. RK will only keep recovered goods in the event that the original owner can not be identified.

Toxicity and Harassment
Toxic behavior, both in-game and out-of-game, undermines our mission and will not be tolerated.

Bigotry in Any Form
Righteous Kill is a safe space for all players. Any display of racism, sexism, homophobia, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, or other forms of bigotry will result in immediate disciplinary action. This includes:

Verbal or written slurs.
Use of discriminatory symbols or usernames.
Behavior that creates a hostile environment for others based on identity.

Article V: Leadership and Governance

Leadership Accountability
Leaders must embody the values of Righteous Kill and act in the best interest of the organization.

Democratic Oversight
Members may propose amendments to this charter, with changes subject to a majority vote.

Disciplinary Action
Violations of this charter will be reviewed by leadership, with consequences ranging from warnings to expulsion.

Article VI: Our Oath

As members of Righteous Kill, we swear to uphold this charter, to act with honor, and to strive toward a safer, more just Star Citizen universe. We are the protectors, the enforcers, and the deterrent. We righteously kill so others don’t have to.
