History

The Tale of Chushingura and the Start of Ronin Defense

Ronin Defense started as the brainchild of the infamous mercenary Chushingura. After years of successful contracts, he decided he had enough of working for large soulless PMC’s and ventured out to form his own. This outfit needed to be a diverse but experienced group, so he put out a call for any wanderers out in the galaxy that would like to join a family while earning credits. The amount of interest and citizens volunteering was tremendous, so after a vote the new PMC headed to Saisei, the beautiful city of Earthen Japanese expatriates that has become a jewel in the ‘verse. Specifically, the group set up shop in Fujin City and immediately took advantage of all the business and pleasures this new city had to offer.

After setting into their new home, a final name needed to be decided upon for this new clan of warriors. In the spirit of their new Earthen Japanese home and newfound culture, the group found a connection to the ancient Earthen Japanese legend of the forty-seven rōnin. This tale involved forty-seven master-less samurai who banded together to achieve their objective. The term Ronin become a staple within Chushingura’s new PMC, with the group eventually taking the name officially. These wandering Samurai represent the members of Ronin Defense, as each member started as a wanderer who found their way home and bonded together to complete objective after objective.

From this point forward, however, things for Ronin Defence was not easy and have never been since. Chushingura immediately began accepting high profile security contracts involving things such as perimeter security at the Musashi Industrial & Starflight Concern corporate showroom in Fujin City, and classified contracts with various luxury goods manufacturers and exporters. Ronin Defense got lucky and exploded in popularity among the exporters of Saisei following extraordinarily successful ground and space-based security contracts.

Following Ronin Defenses success on Saisei, Chushingura realized that in order to establish more legitimacy among his competitors and potential clientele, a structural and naval reform was needed within Ronin Defense. What followed next was the establishment of a formal rank structure within Ronin Defense as well as the purchase of its first capital class vessel. In the year 2943, Ronin Defense was lucky enough to have the chance to purchase an Idris class vessel that was retired by the UEE military. After a lengthy discussion, this newly acquired Idris was to be named the Oishi Yoshio in its glorious form. This was to serve as the gateway to Ronin Defenses expanse into the greater reaches of space.

The point in which Ronin Defense became a widely known PMC was after the Attack on Vega II in the year 2945. Despite most of the Vanduul retreating after their defeat at the hands of UEE Admiral Bishop, small raids from the Vanduul persisted as well as a huge uptick in crime in neighboring systems in the years that followed. The demand for a well-trained and heavily equipped force to patrol jump points and other important places valuable to those who would pay exploded. Chushingura embarked Ronin Defense in its first ever long-distance operation in order to take advantage of the over-whelming number of security and defense contracts in the cluster of systems around Vega II and its neighboring border systems. The name of this fleet that set out on this operation went by the now historic Battle Group Eiko (meaning glory in the Earthen Japanese language).

From 2945 until the year 2947, Ronin Defense never returned to Saisei. Chushingura led his troops all over the border systems, repelling alien forces and human criminals alike in the name of glory and reputation. This two-year endeavor by Ronin Defense led to a huge boost in fame and disdain in the minds of any organization they were hired to deal with. By the time 2947 rolled around, Battle Group Eiko was well-worn and its members were exhausted from two straight years of warfare and conflict. Chushingura made the call to return to their home in Fujin City to rest and prepare for the next great voyage that Ronin Defense will be hired to embark on.

It is said that those interested in hiring this group of battle-hardened wanderers can find them in the many fine establishments of Fujin City. However, be prepared as Ronin Defense is not cheap but the client can rest assured, they will get the job done in a timely manner.

DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR

Due to Ronin Defenses patronage of the Earthen Japanese legend of the forty-seven rōnin, many virtues and traditions are also followed within the PMC. Such examples are found in the ancient Japanese Bushido Code:

I. Rectitude or Justice

Bushido refers not only to martial rectitude, but to personal rectitude: Rectitude or Justice, is the strongest virtue of Bushido. A well-known samurai defines it this way: ‘Rectitude is one’s power to decide upon a course of conduct in accordance with reason, without wavering; to die when to die is right, to strike when to strike is right.’ Another speaks of it in the following terms: ‘Rectitude is the bone that gives firmness and stature. Without bones the head cannot rest on top of the spine, nor hands move nor feet stand. So without Rectitude neither talent nor learning can make the human frame into a samurai.’

II. Courage

Bushido distinguishes between bravery and courage: Courage is worthy of being counted among virtues only if it’s exercised in the cause of Righteousness and Rectitude. In his Analects, Confucius says: ‘Perceiving what is right and doing it not reveals a lack of Courage.’ In short, ‘Courage is doing what is right.’

III. Benevolence or Mercy

A human invested with the power to command and the power to kill was expected to demonstrate equally extraordinary powers of benevolence and mercy: Love, magnanimity, affection for others, sympathy and pity, are traits of Benevolence, the highest attribute of the human soul. Both Confucius and Mencius often said the highest requirement of a ruler of men is Benevolence.

IV. Politeness

Discerning the difference between obsequiousness and politeness can be difficult for casual visitors to Japan, but for a true man, courtesy is rooted in benevolence: Courtesy and good manners have been noticed by every foreign tourist as distinctive Japanese traits. But Politeness should be the expression of a benevolent regard for the feelings of others; it’s a poor virtue if it’s motivated only by a fear of offending good taste. In its highest form Politeness approaches love.

V. Honesty and Sincerity

True samurai, according to author Nitobe, disdained money, believing that “men must grudge money, for riches hinder wisdom.” Thus children of high-ranking samurai were raised to believe that talking about money showed poor taste, and that ignorance of the value of different coins showed good breeding: Bushido encouraged thrift, not for economical reasons so much as for the exercise of abstinence. Luxury was thought the greatest menace to manhood, and severe simplicity was required of the warrior class … the counting machine and abacus were abhorred.

VI. Honor

Though Bushido deals with the profession of soldiering, it is equally concerned with non-martial behavior: The sense of Honor, a vivid consciousness of personal dignity and worth, characterized the samurai. He was born and bred to value the duties and privileges of his profession. Fear of disgrace hung like a sword over the head of every samurai … To take offense at slight provocation was ridiculed as ‘short-tempered.’ As the popular adage put it: ‘True patience means bearing the unbearable.’

VII. Loyalty

Economic reality has dealt a blow to organizational loyalty around the world. Nonetheless, true men remain loyal to those to whom they are indebted: Loyalty to a superior was the most distinctive virtue of the feudal era. Personal fidelity exists among all sorts of men: a gang of pickpockets swears allegiance to its leader. But only in the code of chivalrous Honor does Loyalty assume paramount importance.

VIII. Character and Self-Control

Bushido teaches that men should behave according to an absolute moral standard, one that transcends logic. What’s right is right, and what’s wrong is wrong. The difference between good and bad and between right and wrong are givens, not arguments subject to discussion or justification, and a man should know the difference. Finally, it is a man’s obligation to teach his children moral standards through the model of his own behavior: The first objective of samurai education was to build up Character. The subtler faculties of prudence, intelligence, and dialectics were less important. Intellectual superiority was esteemed, but a samurai was essentially a man of action. No historian would argue that Hideyoshi personified the Eight Virtues of Bushido throughout his life. Like many great men, deep faults paralleled his towering gifts. Yet by choosing compassion over confrontation, and benevolence over belligerence, he demonstrated ageless qualities of manliness. Today his lessons could not be more timely.
