One price goes anywhere!
1516 – The Origin:
The service was first created by King Henry VIII, who established a “Master of the Posts.” However, this was for royal use only. It was a far cry from the service we know today, but a seed was planted.
1635 – The Public Service:
King Charles I, likely seeing the profit potential, opens the postal service to the public. For the first time, any citizen could send a letter, provided they had the coin. This established the core principle: moving information and goods from one hand to another for a price.
1840 – The Revolution:
The “Penny Black” stamp is introduced. This simple, adhesive-backed piece of paper revolutionized communication. It standardized pricing and made the mail accessible to all, not just the wealthy. The service boomed, its network spanning the British Empire.
2112 – The First Leap:
With humanity firmly established on Mars and the first terraforming projects underway, the newly-privatized “Royal Mail Interplanetary” launches its first extra-orbital courier vessel, the R.M.S. Packet. Its mission: delivering data chips and essential supplies to the fledgling colonies in the Sol system. The old motto, “Neither snow nor rain…,” was unofficially updated to include “…nor the cold vacuum of space.”
2380 – The Charter is Lost, The Name Endures:
The formation of the United Planets of Earth (UPE) changes everything. Old Earth-centric governments and their chartered corporations are dissolved or absorbed. The “Royal” charter is officially declared void, and the UPE attempts to consolidate all shipping under its own banner. The RMI is broken up, its assets sold off. However, groups of its most dedicated pilots and managers buy their old ships and routes, continuing to operate independently. They keep the name: “Royal Mail.” A name, they argued, that now stood for tradition and reliability, not royalty.
2754 – The “No-Questions-Asked” Policy:
The Messer Era is in full swing, and the UEE’s shipping regulations are draconian. Public routes are heavily taxed and patrolled. Seeing an opportunity, the fragmented cells of the Royal Mail begin offering “discreet logistics” for clients hampered by Imperial red tape. They perfect the art of data-slicing manifests, finding unpatrolled jump points, and ensuring that “sensitive” cargo—be it political dissidents, untaxed medical supplies, or “agricultural equipment”—reaches its destination. The mail must get through, and if that means going around the UEE, so be it.
2952 – The Modern Era:
Today, the Royal Mail operates as a loose but fiercely loyal network of independent owner-operators. To the UEE, we are just another mid-level courier service. But in the shadow networks of the ‘verse, from the gleaming towers of ArcCorp to the rusting hulls of Grim HEX, the Royal Mail is known for what it truly is: the single most reliable service for goods that absolutely, positively need to get somewhere without being seen. Our pilots are the best in the ‘Verse, our discretion is legendary, and our adherence to regulations is… flexible.
We are not bound by the traditions of old Earth royalty, but by the single, unwavering tradition that matters: The Mail Must Get Through.
While the UEE chokes the spacelanes with regulations, tariffs, and scanning crews who are far too curious for their own good, we remember a simpler, more profitable time. A time when a contract was a bond, a pilot’s word was law, and a sealed box was sealed for a reason.
We are the descendants of a service that predates the very idea of star travel. We’ve seen empires rise and fall, but the need to move things from point A to point B, quietly and quickly, is eternal.
This is our creed.
I. THE PACKAGE IS SACROSANCT
Our loyalty is not to a flag or a politician, but to the package. Its contents are irrelevant. Its origin is immaterial. Its destination is the only truth that matters. We are its guardians from the moment of pickup to the final handshake.
II. BUREAUCRACY IS THE ENEMY
The true pirates of this ‘verse aren’t flying Cutlasses; they’re sitting behind desks. They wear UEE uniforms and hide behind “shipping regulations” and “contraband laws.” We view these arbitrary rules as what they are: obstacles to be bypassed, data to be sliced, and, when necessary, routes to be… creatively… diverted.
III. DISCRETION IS OUR CURRENCY
You do not ask us what is in the box. We do not ask you why it needs to be in a sensor-damped container. We are professionals, not gossips. Our reputation is built on manifests that match the scanner’s query and cargo that doesn’t.
IV. PROFIT FOLLOWS RISK
We are not thrill-seekers, but we are not cowards. We are entrepreneurs. We understand that the greatest rewards lie on the far side of the greatest risks. We fly the dangerous routes, we brave the blockades, and we negotiate the grey areas because that is where true profit is found. We demand payment worthy of that risk.
V. WE ARE A NETWORK, NOT AN ARMY
We are a loose confederation of professionals. Each pilot is an independent operator, bound to the network by mutual respect, a shared history, and the pursuit of credits. We watch each other’s backs, we share secure routes, and we uphold the Name.
We are the Royal Mail.
Fly Fast. Fly Quiet. Get Paid.
PREAMBLE
This Charter serves as the binding agreement for all members operating under the name and reputation of the Royal Mail. We are a professional logistics network bound by one code, and one code only: The Mail Must Get Through. We exist to provide timely, discreet, and flexible solutions to the… complications… of interstellar commerce, and to secure a profit in doing so.
ARTICLE I: NAME AND PURPOSE
Name: The name of this organization is the Royal Mail. We carry this name not as subjects of any government, but as masters of our trade, upholding a tradition of reliability that predates the UEE itself.
Purpose: The primary purpose of the Royal Mail is the transport of goods, data, and personnel. Our secondary, and no less vital, purpose is to ensure that arbitrary regulations, excessive tariffs, and inconvenient scans do not impede the free flow of commerce (or our profit margins).
ARTICLE II: MEMBERSHIP
Recruitment: Prospective members must be vouched for by a current member in good standing. Recruits will be evaluated on their skills (piloting, gunnery, or “logistics management”), their resourcefulness, and, above all, their discretion.
Expectations: A member of the Royal Mail is an independent professional. You are expected to be self-sufficient, maintain your own vessel, and honor the contracts you accept. You are the face of the Mail; act with professionalism, even when… negotiating… with a belligerent customs official.
Severance (Voluntary): Members may leave the Royal Mail at any time. We wish them well in their future endeavors, provided they remember that our routes, client lists, and methods are confidential. Permanently.
Severance (Involuntary): Betrayal of the Mail is the only unpardonable offense. “Betrayal” is defined as:
a) Theft of cargo or property from a fellow member.
b) Willfully disclosing a member’s client, cargo, or secure route to the UEE, Advocacy, or any other hostile entity.
c) Failure to render aid to a member under attack during an organizational operation, when able.
d) Looking in the box.
Punishment for betrayal is final and will be… delivered… by the membership.
ARTICLE III: GOVERNANCE AND STRUCTURE
A Network, Not an Army: The Royal Mail is a confederation of equals, not a military hierarchy. We value skill, not rank.
Leadership: Experienced members, who may use the traditional title of “Postmaster,” may coordinate large-scale operations or mediate disputes. They organize, they do not command.
Policy: This Charter is our only law. Any amendments must be agreed upon by a majority of the active membership.
ARTICLE IV: CODE OF CONDUCT
The Contract is Bond: You take the job, you finish the job. The package is delivered, the data is transferred, the client is satisfied. No excuses. The Mail gets through.
Discretion is our Currency: We do not speak of our clients. We do not speak of our cargo. We do not speak of our routes to outsiders. We are professionals, not gossips. Our reputation for silence is as valuable as our ships.
Internal Affairs: No member shall bring harm to another member or their property. Disputes are to be settled internally, mediated by a Postmaster if necessary. We do not involve the UEE.
Professional Courtesy: We do not interfere with legitimate, UEE-sanctioned postal couriers. They have a hard enough job as it is, and we are not common pirates.
ARTICLE V: DISTRIBUTION OF PROFIT
Private Contracts: Your contract, your profit. A member who secures their own work keeps 100% of the payment.
Organizational Contracts: For operations sourced and coordinated by the Royal Mail, payment will be distributed in pre-negotiated shares. A standard “finder’s fee” or organizational tithe (typically 10-15%) is applied to cover operational costs, data, and fuel for support craft.
Salvage: Any… unclaimed… goods acquired as a “logistical bonus” during an organizational operation are to be divided fairly among all participants, after the primary objective is secure. The original package always comes first.
RATIFICATION
By accepting membership in the Royal Mail, you agree to abide by this Charter. This document stands as our only law, above any UEE regulation or local ordinance.
Fly Fast. Fly Quiet. Get Paid.
