The Swiss Guards, rooted in a legacy dating back to 1506, evolved into an elite Private Military Company by 2523. Known for unmatched discipline and valor, they serve the United Empire of Earth with distinction, blending tradition and cutting-edge tactics to safeguard the future among the stars.
The Swiss Guards, founded in 1506, hold the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating military unit in history and the smallest army in the world. From their inception, they were an elite force of Swiss soldiers serving European courts, revered for their unwavering discipline, fierce loyalty, and unmatched martial prowess. Feared by adversaries and respected by allies, they earned their most enduring legacy as the Pontifical Swiss Guard, protectors of the Vatican.
In the 19th century, Switzerland outlawed foreign military service through the Federal Constitution of 1848, a restriction reinforced by a law in 1859. The only exception permitted was the continued service of the Pontifical Swiss Guard. Even as geopolitical changes swept through Europe, the Swiss Guards remained steadfast, upholding their principles and awaiting a new era to redefine their role.
The opportunity for transformation came with the formation of the United Nations of Earth (UNE) in 2380. As humanity ventured into space, the Swiss Guards adapted to interstellar operations, transitioning into an independent Private Military Company (PMC). Though rebranded, they carried forward their fearsome reputation for precision and professionalism, proving invaluable as humanity expanded across the stars.
Under the United Planets of Earth (UPE), established in 2523, the Swiss Guards further solidified their role. Their disciplined tactics and storied martial heritage made them a formidable force in the UPE’s campaigns, particularly during the First Tevarin War (2541–2546). Their victories on the battlefield left an indelible mark, earning them admiration—and fear—throughout the galaxy.
With the formation of the United Empire of Earth (UEE) in the 26th century, the Swiss Guards seamlessly transitioned once again. While aligning with the new political structure, they preserved their independence, blending ancient traditions with advanced technology to adapt to the ever-evolving landscape of interstellar warfare.
Today, the Swiss Guards remain a symbol of reliability and excellence. They stand as a bridge between Earth’s ancient martial history and the vast possibilities of the cosmos, feared and respected wherever they operate. Their enduring motto—Tradition, Discipline, and Innovation—guides them as they protect the future while honoring the past.
