Kanō Jigorō [嘉納 治五郎], born on October 28th of 1860, was a Japanese educator and athlete, the founder of Judo. Judo was the first Japanese martial art to gain widespread international recognition, and the first to become an official Olympic sport. Pedagogical innovations attributed to Kanō include the use of black and white belts, and the introduction of the dan ranking to show the relative ranking among members of a martial art style. Well-known mottoes attributed to Kanō include “maximum efficiency with minimum effort” [精力善用 seiryoku zen’yō] and “mutual welfare and benefit” [自他共栄 jita kyōei]. In his professional life, Kanō was an educator.
Important postings included;Mitsuyo Maeda [前田 光世], born on November 28th 1878, was a prominent member of the Kodokan. Maeda was affectionately known to those in the know, as Conde Koma [Count Combat]. In 1914, he would bring to Brazil, with his fellow graduated Kodokan judoka, Soishiro Satake, Kodokan Judo. In 1917, Carlos Gracie would watch a demonstration of Maeda’s strange power, with his father Gastão Gracie, at the Da Paz Theatre. After approaching Maeda with desires to harness and possess such power, Carlos was accepted as a student. While learning for many years, Carlos eventually began passing his knowledge on to his brothers, which further evolved into the manifested nonentity & lifestyle modernly reffered to as Brazilian Jiu-Jistu.
In 1972, Carley Gracie moved to the United States to spread the knowledge of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and in 1978 was followed by Rorion Gracie, who co-founded the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 1993. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu came to internationally prominent martial arts circles when legend & expert Royce Gracie won the first, second and fourth Ultimate Fighting Championships, which at the time were single elimination martial arts tournaments. Royce fought against several larger opponents in other styles, including; boxing, shoot-fighting, muay thai, karate, wrestling, and taekwondo. Following this incredible demonstration of his power on a world stage would cement Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on the map, and it’s full knowledge a clear and elementary milestone in any, even to date, MMA champion’s career.
Renzo Gracie, born in 1967, is the son of Robson Gracie, grandson of Carlos Gracie, nephew of Carlos Gracie Jr, grandnephew of Helio Gracie, and the 1st cousin once removed of Royce Gracie. Renzo, a 6th Degree Black Belt under Carlos Gracie Jr, revolutionized the knowledge even further out of his academy previously in NYC [RGA]. By the year 2019 RGA had trained some of the worlds most elite submission grapplers on the planet. With the help of John Danaher and many others, RGA slowly began to take the world by storm.
In the year 2071 nearly 83% of the entire human population had reached the level of blue belt or higher. Violent crime had nearly dissolved entirely, and it was taught in countless schools across the Sol System. Many historians have called the 21st century the golden age for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Maintaining its high status for another 475 years, in 2547 it was officially adopted by the UEE for every member of the military to possess a black belt or higher within the first two years of their service.
