History

Early History: 19th Century
Know Nothings were originally a secret society which has an unknown name and date of origin. Its existence first appeared in recorded history in the early-to-mid-1850s as a political movement which briefly emerged as a major political party under the name “Native American Party”, later shortened to “American Party” in 1855. Members of the movement were required to say “I know nothing” whenever they were asked about its specific political views by outsiders, providing the group with its colloquial name.

Despite this attempt of total secrecy, the political party faction of The Know Nothings appeared in many respects to the public as being solely focused on anti-immigration. However, the party was progressive in its stances on issues of labor rights and the need for increased government spending and furnished support for an expansion of the rights of women, the regulation of industry, and support of measures which were designed to improve the status of working people.

At the peak of The Know Nothings popularity, former President of the United States of America, Milard Filmore accepted their nomination for reelection in 1856. Filmore, a former member of the Whig Party, had been rumored to join The Know Nothings, however in true Know Nothing tradition, he denied he was a member of their political party even though he in fact that his acceptance of their nomination was public. Filmore lost the election of 1856, which quickly dampened hopes of a political stronghold for The Know Nothings even before it began.

As public support and popularity dwindled, some politicians began to criticize The Know Nothings. At first, most of this criticism was done privately, for fear of the political retribution.

For example, in a private letter, Abraham Lincoln denounced that he was a Know Nothing, saying he would rather move to Russia than be associated with their political movement. Publicly, however he never referenced or even spoke of The Know Nothings at all. Leaving some to believe he may have in fact been a member.

By all appearances it would seem that is where the story of The Know Nothings ended. In the coming years after Filmore’s loss, most of the prominent members of The Know Nothing publicly disbanded and joined the Republican party, which aligned with their anti-slavery beliefs, or removed themselves from public politics entirely.

However, prior to this very public dissolution of the group, there were a growing faction within the leadership of the group who thought that operating in total secrecy was in fact the more ideal way to invoke their influence on the national political landscape. And they would take it upon themselves to continue the group’s legacy in secret.

History
For the next several hundred years The Know Nothings largely, and quite effectively, operated in total secrecy. Their substantial power and influence could be felt through their strategically placed operatives in other groups of influence, corporations, political parties, and religious organizations. The majority of the population remains ignorant of their existence and intentions.

Manifesto

We are everywhere. Our members are the pilots, prospectors, explorers, engineers, mercenaries, bankers, and influential political figures that you, the uninformed, unknowingly interact with every day. Our influence can be felt, but never identified and never fully understood from the outside. As the oldest politically-driven movement in recorded history, we have become extremely effective at subverting attempted efforts that do not coincide with out own self-interests.

We have a long history of defending the rights of those less fortunate and encouraging equal opportunities for who, through no fault of their own, have been disadvantaged.

We choose to operate in total secrecy, thereby circumventing the trappings of labels and political in-fighting that plague other such movements and only results inaction and complacency. We openly admit to using subversive means to achieve our goals. And we are very good at getting things done. You may know what we stand for, but you will never know how we accomplish what we do.

So if you know something, it’s best for you and yours to say you know nothing.

Of course members are required to respond with these exact words, but by having non-members respond accordingly, it will assist in protecting the identity of those who need to operate in secret.
