Keepers of the Vending Machine—guardians of the galaxy’s last cold drinks. We run bounties, supply allies, and keep the snacks flowing. Laid-back crew, good vibes, and just enough chaos to keep things interesting. Join up—because the machine won’t defend itself.
The first modern coin-operated vending machines were introduced in London, England in the early 1880s, dispensing postcards. The machine was invented by Percival Everitt in 1883 and soon became a widespread feature at railway stations and post offices, dispensing envelopes, postcards, and notepaper. The Sweetmeat Automatic Delivery Company was founded in 1887 in England as the first company to deal primarily with the installation and maintenance of vending machines. In 1893, Stollwerck, a German chocolate manufacturer, was selling its chocolate in 15,000 vending machines. It set up separate companies in various territories to manufacture vending machines to sell not just chocolate, but cigarettes, matches, chewing gum, and soap products.
The first vending machine in the U.S. was built in 1888 by the Thomas Adams Gum Company, selling gum on New York City train platforms. The idea of adding games to these machines as a further incentive to buy came in 1897 when the Pulver Manufacturing Company added small figures, which would move around whenever somebody bought some gum from their machines. This idea spawned a whole new type of mechanical device known as the “trade stimulators”.
THE VENDING MACHINE MANIFESTO
Issued by the Keepers of the Vending Machine
We, the Keepers, do solemnly swear to uphold the sacred duty of guarding the galaxy’s last cold drinks and barely-functioning snack dispensers.
In a universe obsessed with power, profit, and pointless dogfights…
we recognize the true foundation of civilization:
Accessible refreshments.
We believe:
A pilot without a drink is a pilot on the edge.
A crew without snacks is a crew one bad decision away from disaster.
And a vending machine left unguarded is an invitation to chaos.
Therefore, we act.
We run bounties—not for glory, but to eliminate threats to vending machine stability.
We supply our allies—not out of charity, but because a well-fed ally is a loyal ally.
We fly together—not because we have to, but because it’s more fun when someone else witnesses your terrible landing.
We are not the richest.
We are not the most feared.
But we are the reason there’s still a cold drink waiting at the end of a long flight.
To those who would threaten the machine:
We are watching.
To those who would join us:
Bring good vibes. Bring bad ideas. Bring whatever ship you managed not to explode.
The rest… we’ll figure out.
Signed,
The Keepers of the Vending Machine
“Because the machine won’t protect itself.”
