History of Veteran Gaming Australia (VGA)
Founded in 2021, Veteran Gaming Australia (VGA) was established with a clear purpose — to build a thriving, inclusive community centred around gaming and geek culture for Veterans, their families, and those who serve in public and emergency roles as well as the public.
From its inception, VGA recognised the growing need for meaningful social connection within the Veteran community. Many individuals face challenges such as isolation, transition from service, and ongoing health and wellbeing concerns. VGA was created to address these challenges by leveraging gaming as a powerful and accessible tool for connection, engagement, and support.
Early Vision and Purpose
The organisation was founded on the belief that gaming is more than entertainment — it is a platform for:
Social connection
Stress relief and mental wellbeing
Shared experiences and teamwork
This vision aligned strongly with findings from the Interactive Games and Entertainment Association (IGEA) Digital Australia 2023 Report, which identified the primary motivations for gaming as:
Having fun
Relaxing and de-stressing
Passing time
Escaping everyday pressures
Being challenged
VGA harnessed these benefits to create a community where Veterans and their families could reconnect with a sense of belonging.
Growth and Expansion
Since 2021, VGA has grown rapidly into a nationally recognised community organisation, delivering both digital and in-person initiatives that support Veteran wellbeing.
Gaming & Esports Hubs
VGA has:
Facilitated, donated, and established over 12 social gaming hubs across Veteran and Veteran-family support locations
Developed Esports hubs at 3 venues, with further expansion underway
These hubs provide safe, inclusive environments where members can connect, unwind, and engage socially.
Community Impact
VGA’s impact has been significant and measurable:
Supported over 42,000 Veterans and Veteran family members through its programs
Delivered over $50,000 in care packages to individuals experiencing financial or health hardship
Hosted more than 700 community events, both online and in-person
Contributed over 10,000 volunteer hours to community support initiatives
In addition, VGA pioneered Miniature Figurine Painting Therapy, offering a creative and therapeutic alternative for members seeking new ways to manage stress and improve wellbeing.
Recognition and Partnerships
VGA’s innovative approach and community impact have been formally recognised across Australia.
Key Achievements
2024 VESPIIA (Veterans, Emergency Services & Police Industry Institute of Australia) Social Program of the Year Award Winner
First charity in Australia to receive a Mental Health Association grant for gaming and geek culture programs during Queensland Mental Health Week
National Partnerships
VGA has established strong collaborative networks with:
Veteran support organisations such as Invictus Australia
RSLs and hospitals
Social workers and community support services
Education and employment pathway providers
State government agencies
These partnerships have enabled VGA to expand its reach and deepen its impact across the Veteran community.
A Community Built on Connection
At its core, VGA has remained committed to its founding mission:
To enhance Veteran-family engagement and social connection through inclusive and interactive community platforms.
Through gaming, esports, tabletop activities, and social events, VGA continues to create spaces where individuals feel:
Seen
Supported
Connected
Empowered
Looking Forward
As Veteran Gaming Australia continues to grow, its focus remains unchanged — to support those who have served, and their families, by fostering a strong, connected community.
By combining innovation, compassion, and shared experience, VGA stands as a leading example of how gaming and geek culture can be harnessed to deliver real-world social impact.
