The railen was I think first offered for sale june 2021, as a concept, and that deliverable was from the VCA which I believe means "Vehicle Concept Art" team, so I think that was just developing the concept enough to be able to present and sell it. As far as I know CIG has not publicly added any actual implementation work for the Railen to the progress tracker, so when it gets actually implemented and released is anyone's guess, but I would expect, it may be a while... Makes me a bit sad cuz I own one as well, its one of the coolest concepts they've done I think, but it probably will be a while till we see it, on the order of years perhaps. I am somewhat hopeful that like much of the hull series it is mostly held back waiting on the cargo refactor, so maybe we can see some more rapid progress on large freight ships of this sort after that is released.

the card says.. "Building... as a flight ready-vehicle." so that seems to be contradictory.

That is the goal of the entire epic, not of the individual sprints that make up that epic. The epic is not closed until the ship is done. And the only indicator we seem to have on them being closed is that they get a "Released" tag added to them that links to the related version in the release view.

it does a bit, but perhaps it was about the preliminary mockup stuff we saw with the promotional materials, to develop the concept past just a drawing, and make a 3d concept of the interior and the transformation animation and so forth. i dont think any of that is meant to even be official greybox art yet.

The Gatak Railen was the classic example of a concept ship. The Vehicle Concept Team created an amazing design and spectacular concept art for the new alien transport, and CIG's Marketing team sold it.
15 months later... nuthin.
To be fair, a transport ship like the Railen will be heavily dependent on the Cargo Refactor so I understand why CIG has not made any (apparent) progress on the ship's development. The Railen's external cargo and fixed cargo pods presumably makes it even more challenging than conventional transport ships. Perhaps CIG is waiting until the Cargo Refactor is implemented and thoroughly tested by ships like the Hull series and Argo RAFT before they tackle the Railen.
Regardless, I'm still enthusiastic about the Railen and would love to see more ships from Gatak.

I think it will take atleast 2 more years before the Railen will be in game.
Per the latest roadmap update it seems CIG is focussed on combat ships as these are important for SQ42 (removal of Apollo and ranger, both non-combat) and the addition of the San'tok'yai (combat).
The San'tok'yai development will probably also be used to develop the X'ian style guide a bit further and also to develop the X'ian weapons, both would influence how the Railen will turn out.
However the San'tok'yai has work planned by the US vehicle concept team untill mid june next year so the best we can hope for in terms of a release date for that ship is IAE next year and that would then also be the first available time slot to start development on the Railen.

I thought the Railen was already in greybox stage based on one of the CIG YouTube videos.

I really hope that the team that designed the Corsair can have a go at the Railen after the former is released.

While this may be my favorite ship concept of all time (regardless of media/IP, it's amazing) CIG has moved away from delivering ships with out their principle game play mechanics. That said, the Railen doesn't secure it's cargo in a conventional cargo container/hold but rather in it's bespoke, exterior cargo pods. So it could (in principle) perform it's primary role with out ever having to actually see a single unit of cargo.
The modelers and technical artists are going to have their hands full modeling and rigging this one with it's unique shapes and complex animations though. I think we're likely to be waiting a good while on this one but I am very eager to see this amazing ship delivered

I thought the ship was in gray box? Would it not be cool if it was one of the unannounced ship this year?
