"Flint" soon became his nickname among other pilots for "he may fly fast, but he'll always be a glass cannon (a 'flint' arrowhead) compared to the bigger of us." After serving his time in the air—and a severe near-miss or two, he stepped down for the next line of pilots to take the reigns and instead worked on the spacecrafts themselves. His leaving of service altogether occurred a few years later.
