In this video I test using a s7 edge to get head tracking features in Star Citizen. I am in no way paid or affiliated with the software used to run this.
In order to do this I use a free software call iVCam to record 1080p @ 60fps. Higher end phones would be able to record high resolutions but at the cost of more resource usage. I decided to use the USB to phone option to get the most stable connection.
Unfortunately due to my low end specs (for SC) it wasn't as smooth as I'd hoped (My fps was around 15-30fps). However the tracking itself was very smooth, despite me being completely unused to having a disconnected head to aiming. I suspect a higher end PC would have a very pleasant experience.
This is the STOCK configuration and there are many tweaks such as smoothing, deadzones and unlocking the head during ADS (To be like Arma with headtracking). I'm sure some tweaking could result in a more crisp experience.
Compared to the more expensive head tracking options out there ranging in the hundreds of dollars, I believe that head tracker using a mobile device is a viable contender, especially since most people have one.
In order to mount my phone I just used a cheap tripod resting on the back of my monitor. I am sure there are cheap mounts out there.
If you have any questions regarding my experience or would like help setting Headtracking up via mobile, just leave a comment below.
