How to make it easier for the game to run faster.

The Launcher

It's a simple old concept. It's called download on need. Instead of doing full downloads of the entire game from the start, you allow downloading the basic first area first. Once that is downloaded, the game can start, while downloading more of it in the background. Optionally, you can set the launcher not to run the game once the basic first area is downloaded and the game can run, but instead download more of it first. The objective here is to allow people to start playing faster, so they can see what it is about. Also, I'd recommend a basic FTP package for this. The starter area can be used for players to see what it is about, and can basically function as a demo. Once the like has kicked in, they'll buy further areas. Don't be greedy though, because people hate paying $$$ for little more, even though it appears big. I'd recommend like $10 to $20 for an expansion, which must then be really worth it. Take for an example LOTRO (look it up if you don't know what it is) It starts FTP for the nearest parts of the map, and then has big fat map upgrades equips and whatnot. Still operational and making money since it's launch in 2007. It's a bit jaded now, but still fun to play. Applying the same expansion structure here may prove useful. Also, full pledges or whatever structure for monetization is in play now, should have a lifetime pledge for like $60 or such, which is then the complete version at any given time, which means the full complete version in the future too. Other people might opt to buy an expansion now and again, instead of paying the full $60 pledge. You can add a platinum package or such, whatever it is called, for something unique like an account bound armor or weapon, that may outshine everything else in the game, but not too op so it breaks the difficulty or such. Nothing breaks a game like OP stuff. I'm downloading this game now, to check it out as it's (shortly ending) FTP. And I noticed the long download from the start. Just wanted to tell you as constructional criticism, not as a downvote or similar. Hope it helps. It usually does help to see into that which other games do, as to prevent mistakes other games have made, which may then be avoided.

By the time my 'forum' ban ends the game will probably not be out. lol Is there even a forum anymore?

Considering the open world nature and high density of assets required, that approach cannot work properly. You could prioritize the starting location, its surroundings and all ships/vehicles, at which point not much else is left to download, so there's not really any point to it. SC isn't linear enough for this approach. As for segmenting the game in smaller packages/slices of content, that makes even less sense and would never even work properly.

I just saw something about PvP, and maybe it's best to reserve an arena planet (separate server) for that. It's not like it was said to be, but at least it's working in that case. There's another way to implement it, and that's a per player setting. When ON, any other player which has the setting ON will see the other player in RED, rather than GREEN. Changing from PvP setting to OFF should also be an option, once switched OFF it takes 5-15 minutes to take effect.

In case you're looking for an upgrade of the engine try Unreal Engine 5.1, it's really good and using the new nanite algorithm creates really pretty pictures but also expands the capabilities that can be rendered in the game. More stuff more FPS, but also easier to make the game run on odlder systems, since it costs less to render, instead of more.
