Note:
I acknowledge I coloured outside the lines a bit with this submission, so if that disqualifies my entry I would completely understand. I had a lot of fun designing this all the same. ⭐
Platforms used:
Photoshop, Illustrator, 3ds Max, Substance Painter
Overall idea:
I wanted to design a pass that was both functional and accessible beyond the minimum. One that offered more than just summary points, but also one that could relay information on a surface the size of a playing card.
Challenges:
Text and iconography would need to be large enough for patrons to read on a 2.5"x4" printed surface, and I wanted to incorporate braille into all the major points, as this is often an accessibility afterthought for event planners.
Details:
Despite wanting to make something that showcases accessbility, I liked the idea of future event planners still not quite getting it right. So I added last-minute, hand-drawn stickers for the alient languages that explain what the QR code is for. Smudged and wrinkled, in an effort to avoid angry patrons from other cultures. These stickers should be grammatically correct for each language, but I'm a novice at best with them.
All braille is accurate, and incorporated to accessibility standards for their size, shape and placement. The QR code works, and behind it is braille describing what it is. I tried to find a balance between having it visible, but not occluding the overall design of the cards.
The card sleeve features a button that, when pressed, will project a hologram of that day's floor map onto the viewer's retina. This will show the patron's current location, as well as all major showcases. When held, it will instead describe in audio what showcase is in front of the patron its distance in meters, and relay what other nearby showcases may be found, their cardinal direction, as well as their distances.
The sleeve is branded with the event's colour scheme, logo, year, and the event centre host's branding. This would all change for each year's event, location and host. The back of the sleeve shows where the device's battery can be accessed and replaced, and I really wanted to draft the patent schematics of the silly device but I thought that would be overboard.
As an easter egg, the barcode at the bottom of the back of the card works as well. It should read 'Tobin Expo Center; Valid; IAE; Admit 1'. 🍻
