From the producers:

Freelancer variant with additional cargo capacity at the expense of weapons. The Freelancer MAX variant sacrifices weaponry for an increased cargo capacity making it ideal for equipment or raw materials transport.

In my eyes, the Freelancer MAX with its 123 unit (vs 52 units of the normal and DUR variant) is an ideal entry level transport ship. It has some scary guns but trades the possibility of a size 5 shield (has max size 4) and some weapon hard points for extra cargo space.

On the upside, it is able to carry a power plant size 6 (vs. 5) and has 4 instead of 2 engines. So, having more power might hint towards the possibility of more energy weapons instead to increase the chances of surviving attacks to make up for the lack of equivalent hard points.

If you did not do so yet, join Star Citizen and use the referral code STAR-3N4Q-57PF to help me and you to gain some extra. For me, it is some knickknacks , for you, it will be $5 worth of in-game currency for upgrades etc.
