“Texas has yet to learn submission to any oppression, come from what source it may.”
- Sam Houston
“Texas will again lift it’s head and stand among the nations. It ought to do so, for no country upon the globe can compare with it in natural advantages.”
- Sam Houston
Commandancy of the The Alamo
Bejar, Feby. 24th. 1836
To the People of Texas & All Americans in the World-
Fellow Citizens & compatriots-
I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna – I have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24 hours & have not lost a man – The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken – I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, & our flag still waves proudly from the walls – I shall never surrender or retreat. Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch – The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country – Victory or Death.
William Barret Travis.
P. S. The Lord is on our side – When the enemy appeared in sight we had not three bushels of corn – We have since found in deserted houses 80 or 90 bushels and got into the walls 20 or 30 head of Beeves.
Texas has a long and storied history full of colorful people and wild stories. If you run into a Texan out in the verse, know that he or she will always be armed, either with a weapon or a beer, and usually both. Texans are an extremely friendly lot, but they dont shy away from a fight. And if you do get into a fight with one, they are surely to share a beer with you afterwards, so long as it doesnt turn deadly. Then BEWARE!! Texans fight harder and meaner than anyone in the ‘Verse! You punch a Texan once, and he will punch you back twice as hard. There are plenty of Vanduul that can attest to that! So if you encounter a Texan in your travels, Say hello, invite them for a beer, but whatever you do, dont piss them off!
Below is a brief history of events in Texas. Sadly, these few lines do little justice to what Texas is, and to what it means to be Texan. UEE records have tried to rewrite this history and erase Texas as an entity all to its own, but Texas is Texas and Texans are Texans and no force will ever succeed in destroying what that means. Today, Texas still produces more fighting soldiers, more entrepreneurs, and more resources than any other region in known UEE Space. The UEE have given special dispensation to the Texas Space Navy to operate within it’s borders as long as it keeps the UEE’s best interests in mind. The UEE also officially recognized the reformation of the Legendary Texas Rangers under the Office of the Texas Space Navy.
Texas Spirit is undefeatable.
Texas is the Alamo. Texas is 183 men standing in a church, facing thousands of Mexican nationals, fighting for freedom, who had the chance to walk out and save themselves, but stayed instead to fight and die for the cause of freedom. We send our kids to schools named William B. Travis and James Bowie and Crockett and do you know why? Because those men saw a line in the sand and they decided to cross it and be heroes.
Stephen F. Austin, Father of Texas, envisioned a land where families could come and be free to grow their crops, run their ranches, forge their metals, and run any manner a business with a fresh new beginning. Family was always at the heart of his settlement plan. Without his vision, Texas never would have grown to what it became nor would it be what it is today.
Sam Houston, first President and Governor of Texas, was a larger than life character with a drinking and womanizing habit, but a keen intellect and brilliant strategist both on the battlefield and in the minefield of politics. His strategy to not engage Mexican forces as they hunted them throughout Texas from San Antonio to San Jacinto was seen to many as a cowardly act to save his own life. He used his time wisely to train his troops, to tire the Mexican forces as well as divide them, and to pick his own battlefield. His brilliant tactical play payed off in a big way on April 21, 1836 at The Battle of San Jacinto where his now trained and eager men won the day. Although the Texan army was outnumbered and outgunned, they managed to defeat the Mexicans in 18 minutes killing 650 and capturing another 300. The Texans only lost 11, with only 30 more wounded, including Houston himself. He went on to lead Texas as its first President and a few years later he led Texas into the United States of America and became its first Governor.
In what was called World War II, a Texan named Audie Murphy arose to fame for his courageous actions to protect his friends and allies. He held off a large German force single-handily using a .50 machine gun mounted on a dead and burning M10 Tank Destroyer that earlier suffered a direct hit from German fire. He managed to kill or wound 50 Germans in the fight and despite taking a wound to the leg he inspired his troops to bring victory from the jaws of defeat. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for that brave act and would accumulate every award and honor the Military could bestow him during his time in the War.
In the realm of Politics, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Dwight Eisenhower all called Texas Home and all rose to power as the President of the United States of America.
Texas is not without their brilliant businessmen and entertainers. From Red Adair and his Oil Well Firefighting company that would innovate firefighting techniques all across the world putting out some of the toughest fires ever seen, to Howard Hughes, the playboy billionaire inventor and entrepreneur who not only designed new aircraft but also test flew them, then turned around and made movies. From the comedic brilliance of Carol Burnett to the one of a kind music of Buddy Holly. From the never defeated attitude of Native Quanah Parker to the “Singing Cowboy” Tex Ritter. Then there is Gene Roddenberry, creator of the TV Show, and later movies, named “STAR TREK,” which is considered one of the greatest Science Fiction works leading to future explorations into Space. Who can leave out the sports personalities. Nolan Ryan was the greatest pitcher in Major League Baseball History, Earl Campbell who was feared as a near unstoppable running back in the National Football League, Ben Hogan the legend in the game of Golf, AJ Foyt the race car driver, the list goes on and on and that is just the 20th Century and before.
In more modern History, Grand Admiral Samantha Winchell, commanded the first exo solar Miliatary Fleet that was made up of 50 Texans including herself. She was quoted as saying, “If I’m goin’ to Hell, I am takin’ some folks that have been there with me!”
Famed 11 time Roid Runner Season Champion and part inspiration for the Murray Cup, Jimmy “Cowboy” Cooper was born in Texas and carved his name into history and the stars when he dared to race his custom made Hennessy Thunderbolt with one engine and half a fuselage through a small gap inside an asteroid to overtake his opponents and to capture his 11th and final crown. His reckless but precise flying has been studied and reviewed, loved and reviled by billions the verse over and is mirrored in many racers today
Thomas Franklin Bean is one of the top Sata Ball Players today and billions tune in to catch him and his team from Terra topple their opponents week in and week out.
Gordon Fincher is one of Origin’s top Spaceship designers and is credited with many of the luxury items found in space faring vessels today.
Betty Lou Crew and her exploratory and salvage company helped discover the derelict Vanduul Kingship where many of the Vanduul Technological know-how was discovered.
As you can see, Texas is full of rich history and colorful individuals. And throughout that history a few main commonalities can be found. Texans are proud, kind, confident, strong willed, and determined individuals. They believe in family and friends and treat strangers as one or the other more times than not. Texans have always led the way as pioneers of exploration, industry, entertainment, and technology. We are a rugged group of people that can survive and thrive in the harshest of environments. Texans occupy some of the highest positions across the verse and make up some of the largest sections of our military fighting men and women in the UEE. Although the UEE has tried to blackout much of Texas History through the years in large part due to its overly abundant Independent streak, an oral tradition still exists to spread from system to system. The old days these stories were told over campfires. Now they are told in rec rooms of mining vessels, military cap ships, and the occasional star port. Texans will always love their home on Earth, but from the beginnings of space travel, they have been at the forefront of discovery. Now, Texans are looking for a new home, a planet to call their own. One that isn’t part of the UEE, or Banu, Or Xian, or any other government or nation. Always independent in Nature, Texans want what they want and usually get it too.
Texas’s desire for some sort of Independent nature has always been there and today it lives on the form of a group of men and women, and even a few aliens. These courageous souls are embarking on an adventure through the stars to find a place they can call home. As such, the Texas Space Navy asked for and received permission to from the UEE to reform the Legendary Texas Rangers to protect not only Texas interests, but those of the UEE as well. The Rangers will answer to the Office of the Texas Space Navy and will protect the life and property of Texans by enforcing the criminal statutes of the UEE, suppress riots and insurrections, investigate major crimes, and apprehend fugitives from justice.
