Is the cargo box still a thing? Is it being worked on?

I guess it's "TBD" or something. We don't really quite know, the box is from the very early stages of SC's concepting phase after all. It may have been fully discarded by now in favor of a different concept or solution or it might turn into an optional item for the utility slot.
The Aurora as a ship itself might need some contemplation on what parts of its concept will still work in a potential 1.0 release game. The ship has basically been left largely untouched over the years and it really shows these days. It's a sickness that a lot of the old ships suffer from though. But I don't see CIG touching up any ships that are so thoroughly broken that they basically have to remove them from the game or block player access to them.

So, we should be glad that CIG graced us with modern seamless walk up ramps instead of the old climb "rip agency away from the player" animations for the doors. It's one of those little things that makes the ship actually feel more like a real vehicle and not a video game asset. At least in my opinion.

You are right, aurora is an early ship, one of the first flyable I think. Its in the best shape ever right now compared to the broken mess it used to be!

The only thing it's really missing is the promise of a bit of cargo space. Even if the mythical box is not the answer some sort of something to chuck a few scu in would be very welcome. It's definitely slipped behind other starter ships as a result of minimal space. They are so cool though

The cargo clamp at the bottom actually works these days. The now very much outdated concept of how it was supposed to work now actually prevents you from using it though, because its model is still there and it's now in the way.
You can only slot SCU crates using a tractor beam from the bottom, wich is exactly the one direction that you generally can't access it from while the ship is landed. Wich is like what? ...probably 90% to 95% of the times you may want to add or remove containers from it? So basically, you either need to be in 0G and EVA out or find a random box, rock or ledge to unboard and reboard your ship from, so there is enough space beneath it to get the SCU crates sloted in.

It's rather strange why after all these years CIG still hasn't given the Aurora its Stor-All cargobox. I mean, originally we could buy those handheld boxes at the cargo depots already and we're now getting several additional cargoboxes of 1SCU, 2SCU, 4SCU, and even 8SCU afaik; so where's the underslung cargo container for the Aurora series.

I recall that CIG gave Aurora owners a Mustang as a loaner so that players could use that ship for hauling cargo but I'd rather like to see CIG actually giving the Auroras a cargo box so that they can finally use the ship they bought in order to load it up with cargo. Really has me wondering what the issue is and why it is apparently so difficult for them to give cargo to the Aurora series.

If I'm not mistaken, each Aurora had a specific cargo box attached to it, but would likely have the ability to swap it out for a larger one. That would basically be the extent of 'modularity' for the Aurora-series; although I wouldn't be surprised if CIG simply dropped that completely and simply have each variant with a box that can not be swapped out. In that case we would have the following list:
  • Aurora ES: Stor-Al Mini Cargo Pod = 3SCU
  • Aurora MR: Stor-Al Mini Cargo Pod = 3SCU
  • Aurora LX: Stor-Al Mini Cargo Pod = 3SCU
  • Aurora LN: Stor-Al Mini Cargo Pod = 3SCU
  • Aurora CL: Stor-All Big Box Cargo Pod (Model A) = 6SCU
So it is a little peculiar that CIG still hasn't given any of these ships a cargo box. They gave one to the Mustang Alpha a long time ago but the Aurora is just left on a pile. Perhaps they're waiting for this so-called RSI push where all these ships are supposedly coming through the pipeline? Maybe the Aurora will also see some external model changes like they did with the Mustang and perhaps also give the Aurora that new cockpit canopy design now.

At any rate, even though I don't own an Aurora it would be nice for all these people that do have one (as their lone startership?) to finally be able to fly it with a working cargo box.

I would like to see the ability to purchase (in-game) empty 1,2 & 3 SCU containers for bounty missions and place salvage items into that cargo box. For an entry level starter ship, it opens more game play options for new players.

Right now, when I down a target and try to extract items, there is no elegant way for the Aurora to carry salvage items. It is possible to tractor beam non-SCU container items into the teeny tiny cabin space, but this is not ideal. I would like to place salvage items into a 3SCU container that is installed.

But I suspect this needs more ship cargo development work by CIG.

Right now, you can purchase items in a store and get the items sent directly to a ship. But they just appear in the 'I'nventory' when onboard, and you can purchase anything in a store. Even weapons when a ship does not have a weapons locker (last time I checked), you will notice when you buy a weapon and store it in the ships inventory it does not appear in the weapons locker even when one exists. I suspect in the future if a ship does not have a weapons locker you'll not be able to store weapons on that ship.

I hope in the future for ships with cargo space, and you want to carry water & food & ammo or anything you purchase from a store, you'll have to buy an empty SCU container (that will take up cargo space).

This will limit ship with no cargo space, limit what the player can take to what they can store in their armour. Otherwise, what's the point in having weapons lockers on ships!

I think the other other fighter with cargo space is the 325A but is more expensive.

Heh, just happened to notice this post after Ogidch just upvoted an old post of mine in this thread.

At any rate, it's good to see the Auroras having a cargo grid on the underside (at least I hope it's still working as such). Still, it would be nice if CIG were to also make these Stor-Al containers available in the 3SCU and 6SCU versions. Afaik we currently have only the little 1/8 boxes, possibly some 1/4SCU box, and then the larger 1SCU containers. Still waiting on those rectangular ones that the Aurora's were supposed to come with though.

Unless they've put it all on hold for some kind of Aurora rework or something like the one they have planned for the Constellation series. Personally I would just like to deliver those boxes and make the Aurora series complete (any potential ship rework can then build around those containers as they're supposed to have specific metrics anyway).

Agree would be nice to get it working but seems they have poorly implemented this to try and say it works, it really is time for them to update this ship for the current gameplay model

Yeah, especially because of the whole cargo stuff and other cargo-related stuff they implemented it would have been nice to finally give people with an Aurora their cargo box too.

This video demonstrates the needs for an upgrade with the new Cargo Hauling contracts in 3.24. I demonstrate a few (not very safe) workarounds to this problem.

That video is a month old on PTU. The Aurora has been improved. The snap grid was put back up in the rack and the bracket on the back of the rack was adjusted so you can slip boxes in there. I even got 3x 2 SCU boxes on my Aurora CL. If all else fails, just turn off your shields and use the tractor beam to raise your ship up, load it, then pull it back down. Your engines have to be on for this.
