RSI Galaxy : Questions for impending Q&A

November 24th 2022 at 10:23 pm
Yes, we'll know more on Saturday, but since CIG has this habit of throwing the Q&A page up as soon as the ship gets put on sale I thought it a good idea to filter out the easy questions right here and now before they start to clog up the official Q&A page.
So, here goes .... I do realize that some of my own contributed questions may turn out to be 'dumb' (Hey, I'm human) but that's why I post them - to get them solved.

Please feel free to provide answers if the answer is obvious. Please no wild "guessing" unless you have something substantial to base your 'guess' at.
We don't have any information about components nor fuel quantities yet so I've avoided those questions on purpose - waiting for the brochure stats.
  1. Will the Galaxy fit inside a 'Large' Hangar ? (Remember how tight the Carrack fits in a L hangar)
  2. Are any of the three remote turrets already slaved to the pilot by default ? (obligatory question right ?)
  3. Are the side turrets controlled from the side-cockpit seats or from the upper seats at the L/R front corner of the Hangar bay ?
  4. I see two folded canard wings next to the cockpit (see diagram) Do these fold out in Atmosphere ?
5. I see a docking port (see diagram) on either side behind the cockpit but the internal layout map has no corridor going to it. Is there a docking port on the Galaxy ?
6. There are several mystery sections below the cockpit with no obvious pathway to the central lift/ladder. Are these for the bike storage ? If so, why are there different shaped sections for storing bikes ?
7. The Galaxy looks to be a suitable frame to explore with as a Carrack competitor. Should we expect an Exploration module in the future ?
8. With a medical module installed one might expect the Galaxy to have a requirement to be 'fast'. Is the Galaxy "Fast" ?
9. Can the Refinery Module refine Raw Quantanium ? make Quantum Fuel ?
10. What is the largest ship that can fit in the hangar bay ? (Prospector?)

5. Yes it a docking port there, but only one on the left side of the ship. Look at the video at 56 seconds and you can see it.

6. If you look at the video at 59 seconds you can see on the lower deck it is a door there. Just look at the walls they are shaped like it a door there on both sides just they have not remove the part over the top showing that.

7. They have not talked about it. So it safe to say they would not answer this question. You just have the answer it no plans at this time.

10. looking at the Argo cargo in there I would guess not. 3:30 in the video it a image

Here's the questions I was planning on asking;

You have been quite explicit that S5 weapons are intended for fighting larger ships, and not to be used against small ships, so why is a profession focused ship that's far too fragile and under shielded for large ship combat armed with only S5 turrets, instead of smaller anti fighter turrets for defense?

How can such a large ship possibly be balanced having only a single S3 shield? Most other non-combat ships in that size range all have at least two S3 shields, and some of those, like the Carrack are also described as having pretty decent armor on top of that. Not to mention last year's Odyssey is only slightly larger, yet has a whole S4 shield. It's seems unlikely the Galaxy will end up with seven times stronger armor than the Odyssey in order to even out having only a seventh of the shield HP, or even twice the armor of the Carrack to balance having half the shields. How could any future armor or damage system balance the sort of massive survivability differences those wildly different amounts of regenerating hp give a ship? (Obviously, I wouldn't bother with this question if the leaks turn out to be wrong about the shields.)

Will we ever actually see a refueling module, because Pyro probably needs additional refueling ships far more than it needs a second refinery ship?

A single S3 shield would be a major 'pass' for me.
I get that the Galaxy is meant as a Civilian-Industrial role ship (While the Carrack has military origins) but with at least 2x the Cross section of the Constellation you'd assume the Galaxy would need more shield components than the Constellation.

As far as I know S5 used to be anti-large weapons, but not any more. That role shifted to S7 that are anti large/subcapital weapons. S7+ ballistics get significantly higher penetration rates to be able to bypass shields and damage exposed components like shield emitters, thrusters and weapons.
As for shields. Redeemer got 2S3 shields and S5 weapons. Should all medium ships have that too for balance? That would be rediculous. Military-focused ship should have more firepower, be more durable and have higher maintnance costs.
Galaxy is an industrial ship, it's not meant for combat and should not fly alone in dangerous areas. Odyssey is significantly larger and got no armor at all so S4 shield is reasonable. Carrack is a military ship repurposed for civilian use so it should be tanky.
As for refueling, galaxy should be able to refill small ships that fit into it's hangar.

Right now, the Starfarer is the only 100m long ship left in the game with only S3 shield. Everything else has two or better regardless of what their their role is. The cat, reclaimer, the C2, even the 600i.

And as long as every S5 weapon is still limited to 700m/s they are completely relegated to fighting large targets.

Perhaps Galaxy is well armored. Look at the layout of 600, carrcack or Odyssey, they all have interior tightly packed inside the hull. Perseus on the other hand has relatively small interior, hidden beneath thick armor. Galaxy's layout is similar to Perseus with large parts of the ship left without interior.
Projectile speeds are changing with upcomming master modes and when physical armor is in the game, S5s won't be that effective against armored targets.

I think the life support system is a bit foolish if they plan to set it as current max crew. Full crew doing an op that incudes drop ships with strike teams, your main ship should be able to handle the added number. Max people on board should not be limited to crew only. Large ships & capital ships become useless in larger scale events. I get that NASA standards are limited but this is a science fiction game, so pull the PHDs off the wall its not helping CIG. Last I checked in every TV series, move, book, the ship rescued survivors form a planet or ran an op with a 6 man strike team with a drop ship, the main ships crew was not impacted, unless it was star trek lol. O2 was not exactly an issue, strained & a bit or over worked but not in any major threat of everyone ending up dead.I get that simulated environment content is important but if the crew max is 14, the O2 capacity should be at minimum 28.

890 Jump: command crew, security, engineering, serving staff & the VIP guests.

Galaxy: Crew, Med Mod adds med staff + injured + pilot & crew for ship shuttling the wounded.

Kind of hard to have a party or run an operation if everyone suffocates because CIG has tunnel vision.

- Knowing that it is a non-combat multi role ship why are their two blind spots one on top and the other behind for its size (larger than a connie less maneuverable)?
- Does the medical version have a Tier One bed?
- Other than modules will their be hull versions similar to the Constellation series i.e. combat, exploration and VIP touring versions?

How will the different modules affect the required crew sizes, if at all? Will I need to be concerned with crew performing dual roles in order to maintain the proper levels of life support?

Can any ground vehicles fit on any of the module lifts? If so, Will they be able to pass through the threshold and parked in the hangar?

Is there a difference between the captain and pilot seats, or is it more of a pilot/copilot setup?

Will there be any snubs included? (Like for 600ie, carrack, Connie's, etc.)
