The Exorbitant Space Company is a privately owned company which was established to create profitable trade between planets in the systems of Stanton and Terra. Granted a Royal Charter by the Queen of Terra in 2851, it became one of the most powerful mercantile organizations in the galaxy by maintaining a monopoly on the importation of exotic goods from Stanton into Terra. It also maintained a standing military, which was used in many cases to consolidate and enforce local authority in the extended territories. Official Company rule of Stanton began in 2852, and was in full swing during the Romantic period, only coming to a close in 2865 following an undercutting war.

During the Romantic period, two “Charter Acts” regarding the Company were passed. The first, enacted in 2856, renewed the Company’s charter for another five years, and essentially made very few changes to the established roles of the Company and its officers. By 2862, however, political upheavals had made the Company’s economic methods a contested topic. A three year renewal of the Company’s charter passed, but the act asserted the UEE’s absolute ruling over Company controlled planets, revoked the Company’s monopoly over trade with Stanton, and, perhaps most interestingly, opened the planets to third parties.

In addition to establishing political and economic aspects of imperial power, the Exorbitant Space Company’s influence on Terran society was great. The availability of new and exciting products from foreign planets was very significant in the evolution of Terran identity, clearly evidenced by the well-known custom of “spice-time”. The fascination that many Romantic literary figures had with the “Stantons” was undoubtedly due in some part to the Exorbitant Space Company’s dealings.

Since 2884, when the company’s chief engineer, Russel Valem, unfortunately lost his life as his CHARIOT Drive failed on it’s maiden test – exploding on it’s start pad, the Exorbitant Space Company has made great strides in continuing this closed relationship with Xi’an and Banu entrepreneurs.

61 years later and the Exorbitant Space Company was the first private investor to sponsor the RSI Polaris, fast-tracked for development following the previous year’s Vanduul attack on the Vega System. As part of the 2946 Militia Mobilization Initiative, which embolden the general public to help defend the Empire from the Vanduul and other aggressive forces, the Exorbitant Space Company further invested in a variety of military-grade and speciality ships to continue it’s exorbitance as a privately owned military and economic powerhouse.

In 2949 the Exorbitant Space Company returned to be a standing supporter of the UEE in the Stanton System. Patrolling space with it’s class punching Polaris, against a sudden rise of criminality, whilst managing the company’s exotic trade relations upon it’s Merchantman.
