History

Necessity is the Mother of Invention (2805)

In 2805, Students Persefonie Caldi, Amun Shu’a, and Festei Galentine met through a Zemlochite inter-chapter annual colour debate when they were studying at different institutions in the Rhetor system. By 2806 the three had become fast friends and decided to take a semester off from their respective programs to do volunteer aid work in the Idris system.

On their return trip home their ship was heavily damaged in a debris field. Stranded for a week with no comms, power, engines, and leaking fuel, the three had to get creative to save themselves.

“We just started challenging each other to think differently about the problems we were trying to solve. Between Persef’s tech background and military logic, my engineer problem-solving mindset, and Amun’s scientific perspective, we started looking at each problem one of us was trying to solve form all of these different perspectives. The pressure was on with failing life support and dwindling food, but once we had that first ingenious breakthrough we really started looking at all of our tech differently!”

They spent the next semester neglecting their studies and working on their formerly broken down shuttle designing all kinds of new inexpensive efficiency devices. They made news in 2807 when they sold a single patent for a new fuel injector and quit their respective programs to set up a small garage in the Idris system called “Little Bird Garage”.

The Little Bird Garage (2807)

At Little Bird – often called Halcyon Garage as the Halcyon was their logo, they made simple, affordable, after-market ship modifications for small, independent industry and labour ships. These modifications made the ships significantly more efficient and allowed their owners to rely 15% less on major corporate and government services, reducing their overhead costs and liberating them greatly of provided expenses that had previously kept their profits down. This helped put pressure on the corporate and government interests of Idris to negotiate better labour terms in 2808.

Going Beyond the Little Bird (2814)

When they were approached by a major ship manufacturer in 2814 who wanted to buy the patents of a number of their designs, they decided to publish them as open source instead – forgoing a potential fortune. This made a ripple in the industrial ship market and caught the attention of Johnan Cade, a young socialite scientist and philanthropist. Johnan Cade, who, as it happened was also a Zemlochite, asked them what they would do if they had the capitol to grow their work 1000 fold – beyond ships and helping labourers bypass ‘the man’?

Using their old networks at their various institutions they began recruiting more help. In 2816 Kazbian Amarlite, a promising business graduate from Mentor, Serraohyn Galentine, Festei’s cousin and an exceptional business developer and salesman, and Kadence Bonney – a savant pilot and navigator who had been a blockade runner turned test pilot at UPARQ joined the team. Together the six (with Johnan Cade as silent partner) launched Halcyon Discoveries – an exploration, research and technology enterprise – recruiting employees from budding young Rhetorians and offering all staff percentages in the company and a loose, flat structure that operated like a cooperative of exploration, research and technology. With such innovative and committed staff, Halcyon Discoveries did exceptionally well. Within a few years their sustainable exploration and scientific services had become highly popular among socially conscious markets, and their after-market technology was highly sought after by those looking for efficiency. All new innovations were patented with various social cause charities as 70% beneficiaries or were made open license.

By 2852, Halcyon Discoveries had grown substantively with over 1000 employee owners. That year the original six retired having managed to fund forty new schools and twenty new hospitals in underserviced communities. The brand of Halcyon had been established and a new generation took over under the same Zemlochite philosophy of access for the people. Under the direction of the new generation, Halcyon branched into affordable tourism and voluntourism to bring the stars to those who normally wouldn’t be able to see them all the while providing valuable aid around the UEE.

A Century of Discoveries goes Interstellar (2916)

By the Centenary of Halcyon Discoveries in 2916, HD was the go-to leader in sustainable development and technology and were held as a model for people-first and profit-for-purpose enterprises. As part of the Centenary event a new generation of bold and innovative leaders stepped forward and the company announced a major restructure.

We have grown too big and risk losing the personal ma-and-pop touch that makes this organisation so great. And yet the demand for socially responsible services has never been greater and we are compelled to continue to lead the way. That is why, we are pleased to announce the creation of Halcyon Interstellar – a family of organisations that allow each of our divisions to retain their small, local feel while providing a cooperative network unlike anything the UEE has seen before!”

In 2916 Halcyon Interstellar was branded with Halcyon Discoveries rededicated to exploration, Halcyon Horizons dedicated to research & technology, Halcyon Expeditions dedicated to affordable touring, and the Little Bird Foundation to manage the philanthropic branch of the organisation. The restructure was so successful that Halcyon Interstellar saw its enterprises double in the next 20 years.

A Vision of Sustainability Realized (2936)

In 2936 Halcyon Interstellar made headlines again by making an unprecedented move toward sustainability. From a long-term partnership established while working on the Synthworld project, Halcyon Interstellar negotiated the incorporation of Black Fields Gear and their subsidiary Black Fields Logistics. This saw Halcyon Interstellar effectively expand into resource harvesting, generation, and fleet support which made it the first completely self-sustaining interstellar cooperative organisation in the UEE.

Since then, Halcyon Interstellar and its subsidiaries have continued to grow and are currently the largest profit-for-purpose cooperative network in known space and continues to grow.

Halcyon Interstellar Today (2948)

In 2948, Halcyon Interstellar launched it’s newest enterprise: Halcyon Frontiers – bringing the strengths of the Black Fields and Halcyon Brands together to create affordable settlement and resettlement services for all.

Today, Halcyon Interstellar is run by a board made up of award winning leaders of each of the Halcyon Interstellar Subsidiaries, and the operating officers who are elected annually from the Halcyon Interstellar family of employee owners.
